What is organic cotton?

We’ve all become quite used to looking at labels before we buy things, from food and drink to clothes and when it comes to the things we eat, it’s not just about ingredients anymore, it’s about nutrition too. The same is true of clothes, where we used to look at the label to find the size and the price, we now look for the ‘made in’ and ‘made of’ information and while these might not yet be deciding factors in the buying process, being aware of this information is a good start.

A lot of people won’t buy clothing that is 100 per cent polyester or nylon anymore because they see these as cheap, manmade materials that make for cheap looking clothes so instead we look for cottons and silks, naturally occurring materials that are grown, picked, processed and dyed by someone, somewhere. China and India are two of the top cotton growing countries in the world and it has come to world’s attention over the last few years that cotton growers in these countries receive a low price from many manufacturers and this has been deemed to be unfair by many in the developed world, leading to the coining of the term Fairtrade.

As well as Fairtrade products, we are also far more aware, as a nation, of whether materials and foods are organic or not and organic cotton is no exception, in fact it is a fast growing industry with organisations, rules and standards which must be abided by in order to call any product organic. There are a few different governing bodies so it’s worth doing your research before you head to the shops to see what each one’s criteria is but the Fairtrade logo is a good one to look out for and might well be found next to an organic certification.

Organic cotton is cotton that has been grown entirely naturally, without the use of pesticides, herbicides or artificial stimulants and the reason it can be more expensive is because without these things, the cotton crop may grow slowly, be damaged or wiped out by disease or may not be as prolific as necessary to fulfil demand. But the benefits of organic cotton tend to far outweigh the disadvantages with no air, soil or water pollution from chemicals and pesticides and an entirely natural product that is then used to make clothes, bedding and accessories. It is obviously better for the environment and for the wearer of the end product for the raw material to be free of chemicals and that’s why it’s important to take note of organic cotton and what it means.

Slate will look fine. If it tends more to gray than blue, just go with the neutral palette with the black furniture & white walls. I would add white accent pillows on the bed & black & white photography on the walls framed in black with white mat.
