What is the deal with bugs in bulk rice – should I throw it all away?

I bought a 25lb bulk bag of organic long grain brown rice from Whole Foods. I’ve had it about 8 months and when I first bought it I put some in large, clean and dry airtight containers. I just opened one and started to cook some of it and as soon as I put it in the boiling water I noticed several black-brown small bugs floating on the top of the water. I’ve scoured the remaining dry rice looking for bugs but can’t find any (I think they are there though). These bugs had to be in there before I bought them since there is no way anything got in that container – what should I do with it? I still have a lot left – should I throw it away or is it okay to eat?

I’m with K.B on this one. Give the rice a quick soak and a rinse to get rid of any hitchhikers. Like dried beans, rice is a raw agricultural product – despite the use of modern cleaning equipment, it is not always possible to remove all foreign material.

If you’re curious what they were, you can consult this site http://lancaster.unl.edu/pest/resources/pantrypests304.shtml
