I bought my first Ann Taylor dress when I was 22 years old and I have been hooked ever since! It was a really cute, navy blue, coat dress. I was so ready for my first interviews, after graduating from college. Oh and did I mention that my mom paid $160.00 for that awesome interview dress. Well, it was ok for my mom to pay that much for one little dress. However, when I started working, I decided there had to be a better way to get designer clothes. I began searching thrift stores and outlets for high quality, cheap designer clothes. Now, many…many years later. ( Your funny..I will not tell you EXACTLY how many years later and give my age away…no way) Anyway, today I am an expert at finding cheap designer clothes.

HOT SPOT 1: Thrift stores have a HUGE amount of Ann Taylor as well as any other fashion labels that you can imagine. Since the closing of several Ann Taylor stores, I have seen a significant increase in brand new, with tags still on, Ann Taylor clothes deposited in thrift stores. Did the stores get a tax break for donating a certain percentage of their clothes? I actually don’t know. I honestly don’t even care. However, I do know that the Ann Taylor clothes are there and in abundance. It is not uncommon to find Ann Taylor clothing at 75% off retail! Hurry..
HOT SPOT 2: Consignment stores also are awesome for finding designer fashions. However, you will pay considerably more than at a thrift store. Consignment shops are selling designer labels for close to 35% off retail. This is definitely not bad and you’ll spend much less time hunting for cheap designer clothes at your local consignment shop. The clothes are consistently of higher quality and the stores are more organized.
HOT SPOT 3: Online Thrift stores! Yes, they actually do have thrift stores online. Here, you will reap the same benefit of paying between 50-75% off retail as your local thriftique. On being a conscientious consumer …?
Regarding clothing, would you consider it more socially conscious and/or conscientious to buy _used_ from stores such as Goodwill and Savers and other cheap thrift stores and garage sales, or to buy _new_ from an all-American company like American Apparel?
I tend to lean toward buying used because at least you can put the money you save toward a cause of your choice (such as charity).
How about regarding food? Buying local, I suppose? Buying as much organic as possible (to discourage the use of pesticides, etc., as environmental toxins)?
I agree with your statement on putting your money towards a worthy cause. But I also think when you buy clothes from American Apparel you are putting you money to a worthy cause because they don’t support sweat shops which is extremely important. When you buy from a thrift store the thrift store puts the money to good use but they clothes you just purchased could have been made in a sweat shop. so… I guess it’s kind of like a catch-22. On the other hand I buy only organic food because it is so much better for the environment and yourself.
