Are these “Red Delicious” apples really organic?
My wife always tries to buy organic food (if the price is reasonable of course!) and recently she got some organic apples from Ralph’s; they are extremely sweet… really “delicious”… but I thought that they were produced locally (I live in south California), instead they come from Chile!
The only thing that I knew about organic product is that they don’t usually look nice and mainly they expired quite soon… now, how is it possible for these apples to be perfectly rounded, coming from a long distance without being treated with some kind of chemicals and still being organic?
it used to be that organic product sat on the grocery shelf too long and got less than best results – now that more people are buying organic… it’s helping the turnover and stay fresh.
but, if you can get it fresh (the apples were probably flown in and tree ripened) certain foods will taste phenomenal
I had a similar experience with a nice Italian neighbour who grew his own delicious apples – and they really were! Tree ripened makes a big difference too. Organic apples from BC Canada are amazing too.
other foods that you can really taste better organic – bananas, strawberries, potatoes, carrot juice (no bitter aftertaste), free range chicken, grass fed beef, and for cooking – orange & lemon zest to name a few.
Bro in law runs organic farm & we grow an extensive garden (we have apples, but not delicious variety)
the sticker on the produce usually has a “9″ in front of the regular #’s. ie regular bananas are 4011 – organic bananas would be 94011
an “8″ in front of the #’s means it’s genetically modified.
