Starting A Play Group: 5 Simple Steps To Organizing Your New Play Sessions
These days, where cocooning is an increasing trend and more families are spending time at home rather than going out, it is important to take the initiative on getting your children the socialization they need. After all, social skills are an imperative part of growing up. Many parents are taking trend reversal into their own hands by putting teaming up with other parents and putting together play groups, which is basically just a group of like-minded families that meet once a week to get the children playing together.
It’s an excellent way to get your children involved with other kids their age without just waiting for relationships to happen. If you’re having trouble finding a pre-established group to get involved with, here are some tips on starting your own.
1. Choose a Venue
Before anything else happens, you need to find a place where everyone can meet. There are all sorts of places where this can happen. Sometimes a local church or school will allow you to use their facilities—sometimes they may charge a fee but in many cases they will allow you to meet for free, especially if they have children the same age and want to get involved too.
You can try hosting the event at a different family’s house every week, or you can plan outings to different locations. If one family has a home especially suited for children—with a lot of playground equipment in the yard, for instance—perhaps it would be best to make their home the weekly location.
2. Set the Stage
No matter what the location, make sure it is ready to suit your needs. Of course, this means there should be plenty of things to for children to do—some nearby swingsets and other play equipment would be a good idea, but if that’s not possible, make sure to have plenty of games and toys on hand.
Aside from toys, you should also make sure there are bathrooms on site, and it is always nice to have a small area for snacks or refreshments. Talk with all the parents in the group to compare ideas and identify special needs or concerns.
3. Finding Parents
It may take some effort on your part to find other parents to join your group, but once you get talking to people, you will likely find many others are eager to meet families with children in their own child’s age bracket. Talk to friends and family members to find out if they know other parents who might be interested—it’s always nice to leverage your current networks first.
If that is not enough, consider putting out fliers in places where families go—grocery stores, the library, the park, or church. A doctor’s office that specializes in young children is also often overlooked.
4. Plan Activities
Planning out the activities is always best saved for last so all the parents can have a say. Often, just getting the children together and giving them some time to play with others will be enough—they will take over from there—and the parents present can make future plans during that time.
But you should mix it up by having planned games and events from time to time and even do outings to the park, etc. Use your imagination!
5. Prepare for Parents
Don’t forget that there will be adults there too! Provide coffee, tea, and adult snacks, and make sure there is a comfortable place to lounge for those who have already learned to tie their own shoes. Give everyone a chance to get to know each other because chances are you will be spending a lot of time together…
A play group is an excellent way to get the whole family out there in a social setting that is positive for all involved. If you can’t find a group you want to get involved with, implement these simple steps to start your own and take matters into your own hands.
