Not so many people know what couscous is and fewer people have actually tasted delicacies and dishes made of this healthy food. Couscous is actually a grain food that is comparable to pasta or rice. It is actually made of semolina wheat that’s moistened and then formed into tiny grain shapes. Couscous grains are smaller than rice grains and are dusted with flour so that they can retain structure.
Growing up in a Mediterranean family comes with a mother who’s an excellent cook, who obsesses with nutrition, and in the name of health, often feeds you the most odious concoctions. As fate had it, couscous, along with fish soup and bean soup – all nefarious substances to simple-minded youth, were a weekly given.
Milling and grinding the grain provide different grades of flours to be used in cooking subsequently. Wholewheat when processed gives broken-wheat (dalia) or couscous, Semolina (rawa), and flours of different grades. Maida or refined flour is the by-product of the whole process, the most starchy and nutrition-less product of the wholegrain.

Fruits, grains, fish, vegetables, and good oils and fats really make an impact on the skin. Sugar, bad fats and oils, salt, and alcohol show negatively when used in excess. Vitamins and minerals containing the ingredients that may be left out of the average diet can also play a role in making the skin healthier. Nutrition creates a healthy environment for the organs to work properly and to stay clean.
There are basically three ways in which you can cook your Quinoa; boiling in water, soaking in hot water to allow for absorption or steaming. Always bear in mind that Quinoa, like rice, will increase in size when cooked to about three or four times its original size. Once the grains are tender and have a springy texture, your Quinoa is ready to eat.

Breaking from your junk food habit is not easy, but with the right motivation and some tasty, healthy alternatives, you’ll be on your way to living a healthier lifestyle and maybe even lose weight! Healthy eating may seem like an impossible task, but it doesn’t need to be, at least not with a little creative planning, a few essentials in your fridge or pantry.
How do you cook quinoa?
I bought some organic quinoa (bulk). I have some basic directions for cooking, but was hoping to get some diffferent ideas. Thanks
If you’re not 100% sure that it is rinsed quinoa (which I find bulk quinoa usually isn’t), make sure that you rinse the uncooked quinoa several times in water to help remove the saponin that is on the outside. If you don’t, you will find your quinoa and kitchen have an awful smell and taste! Usually to be safe, I rinse all quinoa unless I get a box that states it is rinsed.
You can cook like rice ~2:1 water to quinoa ratio in a pot, or cook it in your rice steamer using the same directions as rice.
You can add flavour to the water, like herbs or spices, or flavour using broth or stock in place of water. You can also add things like rasins, nuts, etc to make a pilaf style quinoa. Another neat option is to add a little maple syrup and cinnamon to the water during cooking, which infuses it with those and makes a really nice alternative to oatmeal at breakfast.
You can make a salad out of it after, adding veggies, etc. or make it into cookies. I also use rinsed, dried uncooked quinoa in my home made granola bars – I just roast it a little before with nuts, etc. then bake together with dried fruit, honey, etc. to make bars. Very yummy.
