Grow Organic Food All Year Round Indoors With Aquaponics – Hydroponics with Fish!

Growing vegetables indoors is a fantastic way to produce fresh produce and add beauty to your house. Most homes have plants growing inside, so why not use that greenery to produce fruits and veggies? What many people don’t understand, is how productive an indoor vegetable garden can be.

One of the main benefits to gardening indoors is that you are able to control the environment. You can provide the plants exactly what they require: the perfect temperature, humidity, light amount, nutrients and other growing conditions. When indoors, you are no longer susceptible to the elements or unfortunate soil conditions so growing food all year long is no longer a challenge.

One new way that is gaining traction to take your indoor growing vegetables one step further, aquaponics is taking the field of indoor gardening by storm. This kind of gardening is quickly becoming popular as it’s an alternative way to cultivate a ton of vegetables in a tiny amount of space, with hardly any maintenance.

With aquaponics you grow plants and fish together. Your plants obtain their nutrients from fish wastes and the plants additionally clean the environment for your fish. Just like common aquariums, the water is aerated how it’s also circulated through your grow bed.  Your vegetation is planted in floating pots directly fed by your fish tank.

Using this method results in a natural system in which the plants and fish benefit one another – symbiosis. From this system, you are able to harvest healthy plants that thrive from all of the nutrients provided by the fish. Plants grown using this method are highly productive and tend to grow faster than they do outside or using other indoor conventional means such as hydroponics.  As a result, you are provided you with lots of fresh, 100% organic vegetables. And should you decide to grow fish like catfish, tilapia or several other species of food fish, you can even bring to your table fresh, clean, organic fish to consume. If that’s not your cup of tea or should you be a vegetarian, many individuals also use Koi or other decorative fish to transform their fish tank to be more like an aquarium.

The best part is, with aquaponics you don’t need to use chemical fertilizers.  And, when your system is fully planted and stocked, you will find that it is surprisingly low maintenance. The fish as well as the plants essentially look after one another. You simply need to ensure that the fish are fed, either with food you buy or food you grow yourself (such as Duckweed). Of course, if that little bit is still too much work for you, you can find automatic feeders that can alleviate even that responsibility.

Question about growing Lavender?

I just purchased a pack of organic Lavender seeds today, and I have a few question of how to go about growing them. The instructions sayto sow indoors 6-10 weeks before last Spring frost, and then right after says seeds need to be chilled 4-6 weeks in order to germinate. So, do I freeze them first and then sow them, or what? On a side note, what would happen if I just went outside and planted them in my backyard? Would they grow? Thanks. :)

Do half and half, put some out in the garden and put some in the fridge.
