The importance of using natural dyes rather than chemical dyes in the creation of organic clothing

Clothing remains in contact with human skin for most part of the day. As people are becoming more health conscious, they are moving towards organic clothing leaving traditional clothing behind. The main reason for this trend is the increasing use of pesticides in the production of cotton, and other fabrics that are used to manufacture clothes and apparels. Organic clothing is a type of clothing made from fibers that are grown without the use of chemicals and pesticides. In fact, there is a growing trend of using beneficial insects such as ladybugs.

Organic clothing is not only trendy; it is good for our ecological system as well. This type of clothing is not limited to cotton only, and today even wool, hemp and some other fabrics are being prepared organically. Even bamboo has emerged as an attractive option as far as organic clothing is concerned. These clothes are especially preferred for little toddlers as their skin is very sensitive and hence parents who care for their kids go for organic clothing. For all those who wish to lead a natural and healthy lifestyle, and also care for the environment, organic clothing is a good option.

Coming back to the topic, even organically produced fibers have to undergo the process of dying when the final product is readied. Dying has been there since time immemorial but synthetic dying began in1856, when scientists first produced synthetic dyes. These dyes were fast and more and more new colors could be given to clothes. There was a downside to the use of these synthetic dyes as they contained chemicals considered harmful for human skin. Many of the chemicals were shown by the doctors to be toxic, explosive and even carcinogenic. These dyes are not only harmful to the users; they pose health hazards to the workers in dying mills and even to the environment at large.

Considering all the risk factors associated with synthetic dyes, responsible manufacturers are today moving towards natural dyes, and plant based dyes are making their way back into the dying industry. When manufacturers are doing so much to use organic fibers, it makes sense to use natural dyes to make organic clothing completely in sync with nature and give a truly natural clothing option to the consumers.

People have realized the importance of natural dyes and they are rooting for organic clothing that has been produced using natural dyes. Sensing their response, manufacturers are exploring new plant dyes to come up with long lasting and more colorful fabric. Mother Nature has provided us with a lot of plants and herbs that have excellent dying properties. Some of the popular plants and herbs are madder, Haritaki, Cutch, Indigo, Turmeric, Onion, Pomegranate and some more. Some of these popular herbs and plants are for dying while some are used to fix the color so that it stays longer. These natural dyes produce excellent results and people have the satisfaction of getting to wear organic clothes that are natural to the core.

Any ideas for an animal rights presentation?

I have a presentation to give to my gr. 12 World Issues class in a few weeks and my teacher wants us to make sure the class gets involved.
I’m presenting the two sides of animals rights (ie. that animals deserve rights and that they don’t). I’m having trouble coming up with ideas to get the other kids involved and/or interested. For example, a classmate of mine is presenting genetically modified foods through taste testing apples, regular vs. organic.
The subject has a lot of potential, considering animals are used for food, scientific research, clothing and entertainment. Any ideas? Anything said, however far fetched, could spark other ideas, so anything could help. Thank you everyone!!

If you have something old that is real fur you can have the kids feel that and also something that is fake fur but really soft. Show that you can get the same effect from synthetic fabrics as you can from killing an animal for fur. Maybe go to a thrift shop for something so that you are not personally helping to kill animals.
Have you thought about playing a game to review the facts, or is that not the kind of involvement that the teacher wants?
There are makeups that are tested on animals and those that aren’t… one does not seem that it is better than the other.
There are burgers and then veggie burgers; many think that they taste just as good.

The flyswatter game can be fun. Put terms on the board. Divide the class into 2. Give each team a flyswatter. They go up one at a time. You say a definition and the first to swat the answer gets the point. It helps to reinforce your presentation info.
