Why Does United Break Guitars?
This is the heart-wrenching comedyof a musician who definitely loves guitars (called united breaks guitars). What happens when an Airline axes your admired belongings and is not willing to take the blame? You could bellow and kick up a fuss, but they are used to that type of thing and will likely just brush you off. But what if you wrote a song or three and posted them to YouTube.
In March 2008 the band called Sons of Maxwell took a trip for a week to Nebraska with United Airlines. During this flight the Airline people destroyed Dave’s $3500 Taylor guitar. They reject transgression for the damages and as a result Dave was down on his luck.
Dave followed the directions of the United Airlines ‘customer service’ processes, and found that no one wanted to take blame. They used tricks like referring him one department to the next, and even tried to pass the blame onto other Flight Services like Air Canada. Irlweg, a United representative.
I very often think over sized companies like this and their workers are idiots. I have seen it over and over again, and am left wondering if the way they treat customers is anything to go by, then will they be in business in the years ahead? The world economy is currently suffering and business is becoming increasingly difficult to make a living.
Therefore, it is any wonder that businesses like United Airlines aren’t doing far more in their power to ensure this type of thing never happens. Indeed, when it did happen you’d think they would be bending over backwards to redress their customer’s concern. Alas this did not happen and is a very clear sign of the type of short sighted management and leadership that they have working in this organization.
After a while, out of desperation Dave Carroll decided to write a side splitting song about the experience and post it on YouTube; called “united breaks guitars“. The rest is history; the video became extremely popularand was awarded millions of views.
This represented a win-win situation for both parties as Dave got a replacement guitar, and Taylor got incredible brand exposure.
This is especially true when a viral campaign is done as well as Dave did with this.
Dave Carroll was categorically the winner in this stage; massive exposure for his band “Sons of Maxwell”, a brand new replacement guitar from Taylor and another replacement guitar from United Airlines (albeit a little too late for them to save face). If this proves anything, it’s of the power of the internet as a apparatus of enormous free speech; secondly that you can’t just pressure people and expect to get away with it.
