Buying Apparel for Children

Getting apparel for a child, especially one with innate fashion sense (most kids have it these days) is tiring and time consuming. However parents who are buying apparel for their kids simply need to keep in mind the following points:

• Overall comfort level: For a physically active kid, the clothes must be lightweight and should not stick to the body. Sweating usually causes certain fabrics to stick to the body; this should be avoided as a kid’s skin is sensitive to rashes and other skin ailments. Analogous remarks apply to tight fitting clothes as well. These should generally be avoided. Loose fitting clothes which ensure proper ventilation especially near the armpits and the groin area are recommended.
• Apparel material: For kids who sweat a lot, cotton is the material of choice. It is lightweight and absorbs sweat to a certain extent. For children with sensitive skin, rough denim jeans and jackets might not be a good choice. The choice of the right clothing material is best left to the parents. Certain kids may also be allergic to particular clothing materials.
• Future planning: Many parents actually buy clothes that are a notch higher in size for growing kids. This ensures that the apparels last a bit longer before being discarded.
• Kids might get noisy and obstinate at times. It is the parent’s responsibility to make them understand which apparel is correct for them, but this can sometimes be a difficult task!
• Don’t follow fads: Fashion trends change quickly and at the same time a particular type of fashion might not be suitable for your child. Use common sense to judge whether or not a clothing style is suitable for your child.
• It is the child who is going to wear the clothes, not you. Let your kids have at least some say in the entire purchasing process.
• Consider giving organic apparel a chance. Though it can be expensive, it causes less damage to the environment. There are many well known brands in the market and they are lowering in price each year.

Clearly, there is no dearth of variety as far as apparel is concerned. Similar remarks can be made about the clothing materials. As can be seen, good communication skills and liberal use of common sense can be of great help in buying apparels that are suitable for your kids and will not break the bank.
