The increase in diagnoses of autism is due to the broadening of the diagnostic criteria. PDD-NOS is by far the worst category. It is extremely vague, to the point where even normal people could be diagnosed. When a diagnostician or parent is motivated to get a diagnosis in order to receive public services or attention, misdiagnoses can happen. Right now, I believe they’re rampant.

Unfortunately, many people suffer from the misconception that this upswing in diagnoses is due to more accurate reporting, greater autism awareness, or the mercury in vaccinations. The truth is there is less awareness now than ever.

The mercury in vaccinations has been disproven as a cause of autism, yet it remains popular as an explanation for the disorder. Many “autism awareness” campaigns are actually spreading paranoia. They tell you about the increase in diagnoses, but are not so quick to tell you about the persistent changes in the DSM which have taken place in the last two decades.

I have personally witnessed diagnosticians misrepresenting a child’s behavior in order to “score” an autism diagnosis. Thomas Sowell’s books The Einstein Syndrome and Late Talking Children also examines bad diagnosis and suspect diagnosis made by the public school system.

Bad diagnosis is much more likely to cause an extreme spike in the statistics of a disease than better diagnosis, especially in cases like this where the diagnostic criteria are vague and unclear.
