How can I make basic compost?

In the spring, I’m going to be growing an organic vegetable garden. Since it is organic, I don’t want to be spraying any fertilizers or pesticides. I’m also huge into recycling, so I want to start a compost. However, I don’t really have the resources to do so. I was thinking about taking some pure topsoil, putting it in a large garbage can, and mixing it with food scraps and such. Then, I would spread it over my garden, and rot-a-till it to combine and enrich the soil that is already there.

Would this work?

Composting is a wonderful way to start an organic garden. There isn’t any better kind of soil improvement than pure compost. Unfortunately, you have to start a pile with raw ingredients and allow it to biodegrade for several months before it becomes a viable source of nutrients for plants. You should have started your compost pile last year to have enough to add to your garden soil this spring. I keep at least two piles going at all times. It isn’t necessary to have an enclosure for compost, although it keeps ingredients from washing away in heavy rains.
I am constantly adding material to it even in the winter; veggie scraps wrapped in newspaper, is all I can add in the winter months, but come spring, summer and fall, there are unlimited amounts of biodegradeable material available. Grass clippings, weeds, paper, cardboard, small clippings of shrubs or trees, veggie scraps, sawdust and anything able to degrade with moisture and time. If you can’t manage to build a wire cage to hold the materials, you can just pile them up and turn the pile occasionally to mix the bacteria into different areas to do their work. Fall leaves take sooo long to degrade that I usually run over them with the mower which cuts them into smaller pieces and stuff them in large plastic bags with the top open to catch water. After sitting all winter in the bags, they are soggy and partly rotten. At this point you might add them to a compost pile to finish decomposing. You can buy compost mixed with peat moss in bags at various feed stores, garden centers. You may have to use this ready source this year until your pile becomes ready to be used later on in the year.
