Green Tea – What Is All the Fuss About Green Tea?
If you are anything like me, you hear the term “Green Tea” a lot. Ask for a cup a hot tea at a restaurant these days and most often you get presented with a selection of teas that always includes this hot green beverage. “It is good for your health” is said over and over and over. “What is this special tea and why should I drink it?” you may ask.
Green Tea consumption has its legendary origins in China of more than 4000 years ago. It has been used as both a beverage and a method of traditional medicine in most of Asia, to help everything from controlling bleeding and helping heal wounds to regulating body temperature, blood sugar and promoting digestion.
The Kissa Yojoki (Book of Tea), written by a Zen priest in 1191, describes how drinking this tea can have a positive effect on the five vital organs, especially the heart. The book discusses tea’s medicinal qualities, which include easing the effects of alcohol (yes, drink green tea for a hangover!) preventing fatigue, quenching thirst, eliminating indigestion, and improving urinary and brain function. It is also a much more potent antioxidant than black tea.
Over the last few decades green tea has been subjected to many scientific and medical studies to determine the extent of its long-claimed health benefits, with some evidence suggesting that drinking it regularly can lower chances of heart disease and developing certain types of cancer.
Although green tea does not raise the metabolic rate enough to produce immediate weight loss, a green tea extract containing polyphenols and caffeine has been shown to induce thermogenesis and stimulate fat oxidation, boosting the metabolic rate 4% without increasing the heart rate. In long term studies, people that drank 4 cups of it per day lost much more weight than the ones who did not.
Green tea and its extracts, have been used to prevent and treat a variety of cancers, including breast, stomach, and skin cancers. It has also been used for improving mental alertness, aiding in weight loss, lowering cholesterol levels, and protecting skin from sun damage.
Laboratory studies suggest that green tea may help protect against or slow the growth of certain cancers.
The Hidden Benefits of Freshly Brewed Tea:
Not all green tea is created equal-compared to many bottled teas that are available, you can get up to 90 percent more of the healthy antioxidants found in green tea when you brew your own using tea bags. Bottled teas are also commonly filled with unwanted sugars and artificial flavors, and, since bottled teas do not carry a deposit, they often end up in landfills.
So, why not try steep a tea bag today?
Either of these thinga terribly fattening/ unhealrhy?
I am overweight and generally eat not badly and im wondering if it is from laziness or what I consume…being that the two possibly unhealthy things I drink a lot of are iced tea (always either organic, arizona bottled, or homemade. The other thing is chocolate milk, usually prenade. If I cut these things out of ny diet will it make a dramatic difference or are they not that bad?
I drink quite a bit of them both at different times…
If you’re trying to lose weight, your best option is to stop drinking sugary drinks (including iced tea and chocolate milk) and drink water. It’s okay to drink certain juices, as long as they are low calorie and sugar-free. Adding exercise to your daily activities is also very important to lose weight. Cutting out the sugary drinks WILL make a difference; however, don’t expect to lose 20 pounds just from not drinking iced tea and chocolate milk. Losing weight takes a combination of a healthy diet, plenty of water, and a lot of exercise.
