8 Tips For Spring House Cleaning

Spring cleaning is just around the corner. In New England, where March is a cold, rainy month, we’re not quite ready for the annual ritual. But in April when the earliest crocuses start blooming and a few warm days beckon us outdoors, it’s time to finally open the windows, let out the stuffy winter air, dust, wash and clean out closets.

If you’ve lived in the same home for several years, as I have, you know that things accumulate – old clothes, books, kids’ toys, barely-used appliances or kitchenware. They collect in the backs of closets, storage areas, basements and attics until you discover that all your storage space is simply crammed with old stuff you are never going to use again.

I come from a family of savers. My mother and grandmother passed on their pack rat tendencies to me. But I’ve learned that some of that stuff simply has to go. Springtime is a great season to get rid of it.

Here are my guaranteed, won’t fail techniques for getting rid of old stuff, no matter how difficult it may seem.

  1. Do what feels right. I’m a committed green person who buys organic and recycles food containers. Anything that will end up in a landfill feels like a betrayal of my values. My friend doesn’t give it a second thought. If she’s done with it, into the trash bin it goes. No matter how you think about your old stuff, find a way to discard it that makes you feel right with the world. Otherwise, you won’t even get started.
  2. Start small. It’s simply not possible to get rid of all your old stuff at once. Decide on one place to clean first. Choose a closet, a storage area or a bookshelf. Dedicate just a few hours to it, so you’ll feel the satisfaction of completing a project in a reasonable period of time.
  3. Don’t make a plan. Heck, if you liked making plans, you wouldn’t have all that junk piling up in the first place. But do line up a few resources beforehand. If you are going to recycle your things, figure out how. If you need containers to neatly stow things away, purchase them beforehand so you can complete the task in one afternoon.
  4. Figure out where it will go. There are lots of great resources to donate or recycle household items. Organizations like the Salvation Army or Big Brothers Big Sisters (www.bbs.org/donating) will take old clothes, toys, books and small household appliances. For clothes that are still stylish and lightly worn, find a local consignment shop. For larger household items, you can sell online at popular sites like Craig’s List or eBay. If you don’t live in a city, you might try AmericanListed.com, a new site with family friendly, hyper-local listings. Freecycle.com is another place to list online if you’d rather give away your stuff. Also, check out the resources at your city’s or town’s waste collection site. Most municipalities will recycle home electronics like computers and TVs for a relatively small fee.
  5. Discard what you don’t need. That jacket with the big padded shoulders? Get rid of it, along with other outdated clothes you won’t wear anytime soon. If you’re nostalgically hanging onto kids’ toys and supplies, just think about how much fun another child will have with them when you pass them along. Collect toys in a box so you can give them to a friend or a charitable organization. Enlist your child’s help so they learn the value of giving.
  6. Organize what’s left. Once you’ve bagged or boxed up the things you’re going to discard, now is the time to organize what’s left so you can see what’s there and find things more easily. The Container Store and Target both offer a wide selection of organizing containers, shelves and other supplies. Also, check out SpaceSavers.com and ClosetMaid.com for organizing tips and supplies.
  7. Make it visual. If you organize items into boxes or bins, label the contents. A month from now, you may not remember what’s in that box in your basement. When you organize a closet, arrange clothes visually. For instance, I organize my sweaters by color so it’s easy to coordinate outfits in the morning.
  8. Don’t forget to clean. Dust accumulates in storage spaces. Use a damp mop or cloth to wipe down all the surfaces. If items are dirty, wash them before putting them back into storage.

Now here’s the most important step. When you’ve finished cleaning, be sure to give yourself credit for work well done. You’ve restored order and cleanliness to a small part of your world. Sit back with a cup of tea, relax, and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment.

Organic Futon on top of a box-spring mattress?

Is this advisable? I would like to go as organic as possible for my dtr’s room, organic mattresses are $1,700. Will I be doing any good going this route?
I’m concerned about toxic chemicals and off-gassing.

The only real chemicals that outgas would be the glue and any solvents they used to clean the parts.
My mother has Multiple Chemical Syndrome, which means she has a severe reaction to almost any chemical smells. Needless to say, it’s hard for her to go shopping, but from her experience, we’ve all learned that most things outgas on their own within 1-2 years. I also know from that experience that a topper wouldn’t prevent anything on it from outgassing… it might actually make it take longer (because it doesn’t get sufficient air on the top part that’s covered), and you would still smell the fresh bed smells from the bottom (which isn’t sealed off).

If you want to outgas a new bed faster, put it in a room with a good air purifier (like an ozone generator, but make sure you follow the guidelines and warnings) and leave it in there for a while… it should be mostly outgassed in a few months or so if it’s an otherwise empty room. We once made the mistake of having a spare freezer in the room we were outgassing some furniture and the freezer started outgassing…. it stunk in their for months!

Aside from all that, a futon isn’t terribly comfortable to some people, so you should make sure she lays on one or spends the night on a futon before you buy one. Also, they aren’t very supportive for the back compared to “regular beds”, so that’s another concern you may want to consider.

If all else fails, you could just get a futon that’s been in a non-smoking environment for a couple years. Good luck!
