Organizing your Utility Room with Stylish Storage Solutions 

When a home has a utility room it is frequently strictly utilitarian, not well lit, not well organized and cluttered. Too often this room is simply an afterthought, and whether it is a catchall or the laundry room, by just giving it a little design attention, you can have a beautiful and functional utility room.

First Fix Functionality
In most houses the laundry room is synonymous with the utility room, and generally one half of the room is well used for laundry, and the other half of the room is just cluttered and chaotic with piles of dirty laundry and just stuff. One of the most straightforward ways to get a handle on this room is to first organize it and then decorate it. The first thing that you want to do when organizing the space is to ensure that the room has adequate storage available for all of the tasks that you need to perform in the utility room. After removing all of the clutter from the room, bring in a large flat worktable and place it against a wall or install a wall mounted counter-top. Now organize your laundry-related tasks. Then use the space under the table or counter to line up your laundry hampers. If your hampers are on casters, you can easily move them in and out of their assigned spot when you are ready to use them. By storing the laundry hampers under the counter, you keep your utility room floor completely free from clutter. Ironing is another culprit for cluttering up the floor space. Install a wall-mounted ironing board to again keep your floor free from clutter. When you are not using it tuck it neatly away behind its cabinet door in a single movement. If your storage and organization solutions are quick and easy, then you will keep your utility room in order.

Clear Out Clutter
Install as many shelves and cabinets as you can reasonably fit into your room. By having adequate storage for everything in the room, you are much more likely to always keep it neat and organized. Shelves or cabinets over the washer and dryer make good use of an awkward space and provide a great storage solution for laundry supplies. Cabinets with doors will make your room look neater because all of the clutter will be behind closed doors. If you are using shelves, using storage boxes on the shelves gives them a much crisper appearance. Another frequently underutilized space is the area between the washer and dryer where you can fit a small rolling storage bin, hamper or cabinet.

Make the Most of What You Have
Now that the laundry mess is organized you can find places in the cabinet for all of your other tools and supplies. You may also want to add a storage bench in the corner of the room if your utility room doubles as a mud room. The bench is not only a great place to remove boots and shoes, but it is also a great place to store everything from hats and gloves to backpacks. You can also add a boot mat under your counter space to store muddy boots. A few hooks by the back door will come in handy for hanging jackets or even the dog’s leash.

By organizing the space in your utility room you can get to everything that you need to do any household job quickly and easily. And just as easily you can put your mess away which will keep your utility room functional and clutter free.
