Can I just add fresh lavender sprigs to jojoba oil to make a cheap version of essential oils?
Organic lavender essential oil is expensive so I was wondering if I could just put sprigs from my garden into some sort of carrier oil? Wouldn’t this do the same thing, just less concentrated? I’m wanting to use this topically for things like headache and sleep aid.
To my understanding, the SCENT of lavender works for those applications. Am I wrong? For example I’ve read about studies which found putting lavender essential oil on bed sheets and mattresses (not on people) helped patients in the hospital sleep.
Since the SCENT is what works, wouldn’t this be sufficient for what I want? Like I said, I am not talking about taking this oil as a supplement or anything. I just want something that can be easily dabbed on.
If you’re using the essential oils for AROMATHERAPY ONLY, no problem. You could make tea, you could infuse an oil, you could use fresh or even dried lavender blossoms, etc.
For headaches, the scent does have some therapeutic effect – it will slightly increase blood flow to the head, and in many individuals it’s somewhat relaxing/calming. (You dont even have to rub it on, you could just sniff the extract.)
As the other posters have noted, though, when it comes to overall medicinal effect essential oils are a beast unto themselves. The steam distillation process concentrates certain chemical content, which makes essential oils extremely potent extractions. (Typically quite toxic, which is why they’re not for use internally or undiluted on skin.)
