How To Have The Healthiest Lawn In Your Neighborhood

A thick lush lawn does not have to be subjected to a constant chemical assault to maintain its beautiful appearance. In fact the healthiest of lawns are often maintained using only natural or organic methods. These methods also have the additional benefit of protecting your family and pets from the unknown toxic effects of many lawn chemicals.

If going organic sounds like a good idea here are some tips to get you started.

1. Pull those weeds by hand. While this method of weed control can be somewhat time consuming if you get them roots and all before they go to seed your weed problem will be greatly diminished. A weed pulling tool can be a great help when weeding this way.

2. Is there such a thing as a beneficial weed? While most people wouldn’t think so clover can be considered as such. Clover pulls nitrogen out of the air and brings it into the soil by means of nitrogen fixing nodules in its roots. Nitrogen is an essential fertilizer that will enhance the beauty and health of your lawn.

3. Get your soil tested. Knowing its chemical makeup and ph balance will help to determine what type and how much organic material you need to add to get perfect grass growing soil.

4. Reseed bare spots with a mixture of different grass seeds. This will help protect against soil born pathogens that may be harmful to certain types of grass.

5. Aeration is your soils best friend. Hard, compacted soil is extremely hard on your lawn. Aerating helps relieve any compaction and allows organic matter to work its way into the soil. This attracts earthworms which are nature’s natural aerators.

6. Some thatch is a good thing because it helps promote the decomposition of organic matter such as grass clippings. If it has built up to over a half-inch thick it needs to be dealt with because it prevent water, nutrients, and air from getting down into the soil. The best time to do this is when you aerate; just rake after aeration and most of the thatch will be removed.

7. When mowing cut at your mowers highest settings. Grass needs to be no less then 2 to 3 inches tall to properly grow. Tall grass also shades the soil preventing weeds from gaining a foothold. Keep that mower blade sharp as you want a clean cut; dull blades tear the grass causing damage that affects it ability to grow healthily.

8. Use only natural fertilizers and compost. Natural fertilizers are more expensive but they will last longer and enhance the underlying soil. A layer of compost spread over the surface every spring and fall will further enhance the soil promoting the formation of organic fertilizer in a natural manner.

The best part about creating a healthy natural lawn is that once established it will take a minimum of work to keep it looking great year after year. In fact it will become almost self-sustaining much like it would in its natural environment. It will also be the envy of the entire neighborhood.
