Should I feel guilty about feeding my baby generic baby formula?
My first child was fed Similac. I have been researching infant formulas and am finding that PBM makes the generic version for most stores (Walmart, Albertsons, Target, etc.) It has the same nutritional standards as Enfamil, and has even more DHA and ARA than Similac, but each can is $12 cheaper! I bought the Walmart brand today (Parent’s Choice) in the organic version and for some reason I feel guilty about it. Any thoughts/feedback?
LIke so many others have said, there’s no reason to feel guilty.
*All* formula sold in the US, whether generic or name brand, *have* to meet the minimum standards the FDA have set for all baby formula. So no matter who makes it, it has to meet those standards.
The biggest question is if your baby will like it/tolerate it. For my son I couldn’t use any of the generic brands because they were too much like Enfamil and Similac, and they all gave him really bad gas. So for the first 7 months I *had* to use Good Start until his digestive tract matured. (Boy was I happy when he could take the generic!) If your baby has no problems on the generic formula, go for it! I prefered Target or Walmart brands myself over Walgreens (even though it’s all the same company) because Walgreens charged too much. Also, if you have a Safeway grocery store near you, *stay away* from their brand! Different company, and it’s super bubbly!
Oh, and don’t bother buying the ‘organic’ brands of formula. ‘Organic’ formula doesn’t have to meet any type of standards to be labeled as such, unlike foods that are called organic. So you can be charged more for formula that’s the exact same as the regular stuff.
