13 Things to Know About Painting the outside of your home
13 Things to Be informed on Painting the exterior of your own home
1. Honor a historically significant home’s heritage by choosing era-appropriate hues, such as Valspar’s American Tradition line.
2. Think about these questions when matching colors to your character of your house: What elements do you like best about your home? Architectural features? Windows? Porches? So what can you want least? Style? Size? Proportions? Answers to these questions can help you pick which elements to focus on, which areas to decorate program materials for example stone or shingles, and which areas to downplay using a darker hue.
3. In 1978, the federal government banned lead as being a paint ingredient for the poor health, but many homes built before 1978-about 57 million of them-still have lead paint somewhere included. There’s little risk from paint in fine condition, but peeling and flaking lead paint is hazardous, especially to children and expectant mothers. Home test kits for lead paint can be purchased, however the government recommends hiring professionals for accurate testing and safe paint removal. Call the National Lead Information Center at 800/424-5323 with questions and 800/532-3394 to request printed material.
4. Think about exterior palettes with regards to threes: one color for that main body, one for any trim, and a third color for punch to accentuate doors and shutters.
5. Paint can help cut energy costs. When applied under your roof deck, low-emissivity (low-E) paint can trim heat transfer by 5-8 percent, producing annual energy savings nearly Fifteen percent. Try Sherwin-Williams’ Radiance low-E attic and decking radiant barrier paint.
6. Chalkboard paint transforms walls, floors, and tabletops in to the perfect location to give kids’ creative impulses free rein. The latex formula of chalkboard paint requires no special primers or sealers.
7. Magnetic primer is undoubtedly an easy technique to make walls interactive in kid-friendly spaces. Just apply the magnetic primer, wait until it’s dry, and then squeeze in a top coat inside the paint colour of final decision.
8. Prior to going while in the garbage, cans of latex paint needs to be dry out. (Leave lids to show garbage collectors that the paint is hardened.) Or, you are able to mix leftover latex paint with cat litter or shredded paper, allow it to dry, and then toss it while in the trash. Ask any local solid-waste office about disposal programs for oil-base products, and whether there is a designated hazardous-waste collection day. Consider donating leftover paint to your local nonprofit organization or shelter.
9. Metallics, pearlescents, translucents, and interference colors-shades that shift with varying light-are today’s hip hues. These luminous pigments bring movement and emotion to lifeless surfaces.
10. While using the right paint sheen is important.
Exteriors: Flats and satins are ideal for most siding surfaces. Semigloss and gloss paints work well for doors, windows, shutters, fences, and patio furniture. Porches, floors, and decks require special paint.
Interiors: Flats hide surface flaws can be challenging to clean, causing them to be top in low-traffic areas. Satins tend to be luminous, much better to clean, and greatest suited to hall walls, baths, and many trims. Semigloss paints are easy to clean and the best choice for woodwork and walls susceptible to wear. Gloss paints highlight surface flaws, they prosper on kitchen and bathroom walls, banisters, railings, cabinetry, windowsills, as well as some trim.
11. If you have an exceptional color request, most paint centers can mix a custom hue to check your favorite fabric swatch or artwork, often at no additional charge.
12. Waterproofing paint turns concrete walls into water barriers. Available in oil, latex, or powder, waterproofing paint, for instance UGL’s Drylok, penetrates masonry pores and expands simply because it dries to become the main wall. One gallon of Drylok covers about 75 square feet of expanse, and you may need two coats: one by brush and the other by roller. Drylok can be purchased in white, gray, beige, blue, as well as some pastel tints; it is also painted over and done with the latex hue that you pick.
13. Oil and latex exterior paints require different drying times. Use the following guidelines to make certain a good splash of paint:
Latex
Dry to the touch: 2-3 hours
Safe for second coat: 4-5 hours
Oil
Dry to the touch: 4 hours
Safe for second coat: 1 day
Socially responsible, fair trade, and eco-friendly craft supplies in Ontario?
I live in the GTA (greater Toronto area) but may soon be moving to Ottawa, so in either of those places would be great. Online is fine as well, as long as I can have it shipped here for a reasonable price.
I love crafting, but want to be sure that the supplies I am using are coming from companies providing fair wages, treating employees with respect, and doing what they can to protect the environment in the processing of their supplies. Natural organic fibres, products from organizations working with women in the third world, supplies with stories and meaning are what I’d like to get my hands on.
I am looking for yarn, beads, thread, ribbon, fabric, wire, hemp, felt, dye, paint, jewellery findings, cotton spheres, wooden dowel, glues, paints, clay, and other available supplies that would make my crafting more people-friendly and environmentally friendly!
I don’t know if this is quite what you’re looking for, but Ten Thousand Villages is a store filled with craft made items from all over the world. It’s all Fair trade and environmentally friendly. They have fabric and crafts, but they’re already made. I don’t know if you can buy the raw materials.
Another option is to check out fairtrade.ca. If you go to their ‘products’ tab its shows you different fair trade items and what stores they can be found in, so that could help you!
