Washing Stuffed Toys with Natural and Organic Detergents
Babies love to play with different toys, especially the soft and cuddly stuffed toys. Stuffed toys are babies’ instant playmates. However, these toys can also instantly attract germs, bacteria and viruses. Washing stuffed toys regularly can protect babies from different health problems caused by the dirt lurking in their favorite toys. In cleaning and washing these toys, it is important to take note of the detergents you are going to use. Conventional chemical detergents contain harmful substances for you and your baby. Fortunately, there are natural and organic laundry detergents available that can do the job for you.
It is very important to clean these toys with natural and organic detergents. Why? Babies tend to put everything at reach into their mouth. When these toys are washed with chemical detergents, soap residues are sometimes left on the toy, which pose danger to your baby. Organic and natural detergents can give the same cleaning results without the dangers brought by conventional strong detergents.
The steps in washing stuffed toys may differ depending on the kind of material it is made of. First, you have to identify if there is a specific cleaning or washing instructions indicated in the tag of the toy. Some toys might be more sensitive than the others so you have to take note of the proper care instructions to avoid tearing up or destroying the toy. If there is a ripped part, it is recommended to sew it first before washing, or else it will get worse. Pre-treat the toy if it is stained. Dab an amount of natural detergent on the affected area and let it stay for a while.
Most stuffed toys can be washed in a washing machine. Use a pillow case to wrap the toy and wash it together with the rest of the laundry. Using fabric softener during the wash cycle can help maintain the toy’s soft and cuddly quality. Brush it after the cycle. Another option for washing stuffed toys is putting it in a paper bag and put some baking soda in it. Shake the bag until the toy is fully coated and let it sit for at least thirty (30) minutes. Remove the baking soda from the toy by using a towel. This method is recommended for big stuffed toys. This method can also help remove unwanted odors in the toy. As much as possible, don’t use the dryer in drying the toys. It is ideal to air dry them to avoid deformity and shrinking. But if it is too sunny, do not dry the toys outside. Instead, you can put the stuffed toys next to a dehumidifier. While this method may require more time to dry up, you can be sure that your baby’s favorite toy is safe from any damage.
With all the alternatives mentioned above and choosing the right detergents to use, you don’t have to worry about bacteria and viruses that might harm your beloved baby. Organic and natural detergents can be found easily in the market. Now, you can enjoy playtime with your baby and his favorite toys without worrying.
Downy Fabric Softener. Did you know this?!?
Apparently, Downy fabric softener (as well as most other brands) is pretty much nothing but animal fat.
“Dihydrogenated tallow dimethyl ammonium chloride
A derivative of rendered fat from cattle, sheep, and horses. Just boil it down and mix with ammonium (NH4). After a series of chemical pit stops, out comes a quaternary ammonium compound, or quat—a positive ion in which the hydrogen is replaced by long-chain organic molecules. Quats effectively coat your clothing with lipids, making the fibers soft to the touch. These fats also make fabric a bit less absorbent—don’t use on towels or cloth diapers—and the positive charge neutralizes static electricity. There are a few other quats in Downy, with easily pronounceable names like 1-methyl-1-tallowamidoethyl-2 -tallowimidazolinium methylsulfate.”
I feel so dirty. No wonder it’s so flammable.
Ew, this is why I use Seventh Generation laundry products.
