Grassroots Organic Farming innovation- Record Weight Variety of Cauliflower
This agricultural grassroots innovation is not based on any genetic modification or use of strong fertilizers but has been developed from the commonly known variety of the crop by using traditional knowledge and organic farming methods. First of all, this new variety is a result of 25 years of devoted care and selective farming. Jagadishbhai of Rajasthan, India has been constantly monitoring his cauliflower crop since 1970 and each time selecting the seeds for his new crop from the bigger white yield’s plants. Not only this, he also employed specially developed manure for growing cauliflower.
Organic farming method and advantages of high yield cauliflower variety
The seeds from better yield plants are sowed to prepare the saplings of 20 to 22 days old first which are sowed again maintaining a 2 feet gap between 2 plants. Plants are watered every third day depending on its growth.
The manure for this crop is prepared in a 3 feet deep pit in which cattle dung, agricultural wastes and leaves of Neem and Calotropis Gigantica are mixed in definite proportion. The mixture is kept wet with definite amount of water. This pit is covered and left for 3 months after which manure is ready to be applied in the fields.
For controlling pests which destroy the leaves of cauliflower plant, Jagadishbhai use the powedered mixture of 250 g of blue vitriol, 1kg of ash and 250g of lime. 1.5 kg of this mixture is enough for 1 acre of crop. This is applied by just blowing the powder on the plant. Jagadishbhai also covers the fruits of the plant by leaves to protect it from other pests and diseases.
- This variety of plant grows 3 to 4 feet in length and its leaves are rough.
- The cultivar of this high yielding variety gives cauliflowers of up to 12 kg in weight.
- Since, manures are used in farming of this crop, it is healthy and tastier. The natural ways of controlling pests also make this crop environment friendly.
Support and recognition of the high yield variety
This high yielding variety has been named as” Ajitgadh – selection”. The grassroots innovation using traditional and organic farming practices has been recognized and supported by National Innovation foundation (NIF), a non-profit autonomous body under department of Science and Technology, government of India. NIF has also awarded this high yield plant variety in its biennial national competition of unaided green grassroots innovation and traditional knowledge.
