how can I understand fat content in food?
I am a chocaholic”, though –not regular sweet shop brands, just high quality . Much has been said in recent years, regarding the health benafits, of high cocco dark chocleate., taking this in to account , as I incedentaly have high colestarol, I have been eating mostly dark for many years now.
How ever I recently compered the fat contents, of two bars, one milk the other dark, both well known organic brands) to my suprise, the dark bar had a fat content of 41.1g whille the milk was just 29.7g.
I find this very confusing, dark, is said to be good for the heart, “so how can that be reconciled with higer fat levels?.
“Is it just good for the heart of a person, without high cholestrol .
Psych is correct about the different types of fat, and milk chocolate will definitely have a higher concentration of saturated fats. But I am surprised that the dark has higher overall – make sure you are looking at the ‘amount per 100 grams’ column.
More importantly though, is that it is not the fat content of dark chocolate that makes it good for your heart. The fact that it has less fat is makes it simply *less bad* for your heart and cholesterol. It is beneficial for your heart in a way that milk chocolate can never be.
You have heard of older people with high blood pressure/high cholesterol/heart problems being advised to take a half an aspirin every day to help prevent heart attacks and other heart problems? This is because aspirin has an anticoagulant and antiplatelet effect, meaning that it inhibits thrombus (blood clot) formation.
It has been found that regular intake of high-cocoa chocolate (70%+) has the same effects, therefore good for preventing heart disease.
Still, there is no replacement for a healthy diet and good exercise regime!
