Where can I buy a good food preservative for chapstick?

Okay, this sounds a little strange but I am making a chapstick with butter in it. It’s an organic recipe that I thought I’d attempt. The recipe calls for “a food safe preservative” so that the butter and such doesn’t get old and destroy the chapstick. What would I use for this? Any brand names?
It was definitely regular butter.
