How to plant Organic garlic
Organic gardening is increasingly popular as people are beginning to recognize the harmful effects of unnatural pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Growing organic garlic is one of the easiest garden vegetables because of garlic’s strong nature there are very limited pest and disease that can be avoided by simple good farming practices. Such as crop rotation and not planting garlic in the same place without a minimum of a three year brake.
Organic garlic may only have a few enemies but they are enemies none the less, the largest is mold. The large succulent bulb has a lot of moisture and if not properly cared for it can mold and rot quickly. Proper watering techniques will give you the best advantage of great garlic. Proper curing is the next most important thing when you harvest your garlic. After you have pulled the garlic out of the ground you want to quickly take it out of the sun to avoid any sun burning or cooking of the garlic. I like to tie them in bunches and hang them in my barn for at least three weeks. This can be a tricky time for people who want to sell their garlic right away. By getting anxious and selling your garlic before it is properly cured is a recipe for disaster as the extra moisture will invite mold.
Much of the garlic from the super markets are produced in a faraway land and are mass produced. Because they are mass produced they are more prone to disease and therefore they may be sprayed. Also with commercial grown garlic they need to apply fertilizers or other soil supplements’ to keep the soil rich. Also if the garlic comes from overseas it is often times radiated to make sure it doesn’t bring in anything harmful into the country. Also much of the garlic has been given anti-sprouting agents, so on the store shelf’s it doesn’t begin to sprout early. Organic garlic however, can still reap all the benefits of commercially grown garlic as long as it is properly cared for.
If you are going to grow your own garlic it is very easy and simple. You can plant it along with your other garden vegetables; it is very hearty and can survive cold winter and late spring frost. Garlic is planted in the fall or early springs depending upon were you live. There are many great varieties to choose from, I recommend hardneck garlic varieties if you live somewhere with a cold winter.
What can I do about leaf hoppers on my strawberry plants?
I just planted my strawberry plants a few days ago and the leafs are turning brown and very dead looking. I read in a gardening book that leaf hoppers make the leafs of a plant brown. Plus I saw a bug that I’m sure was a leaf hopper in my strawberry plant pot. So what should I do? NO pestistides. I’m growing Organic. Does any one know a way I can make the leaf hoppers go away without pestistides and buying organic replennet?
I just bought some garlic bulbs, which r just very small garlic, would they help to get rid of the leaf hoppers? I bought the garlic to repelle bugs any way.
