Grain free dog food has become more widely available in response to popular demand. Veterinarians are spreading the word about its health benefits as they diagnose dogs with problems linked to a poor diet. Vets are also recommending it as the ideal food for keeping pregnant and lactating dogs in top condition and ensuring that their puppies get a healthy start.

Popular supermarket brands of dog food consist largely of cereal grains. These grains do not form part of a balanced diet for dogs. Grain free dog food is suited to the canine digestive system and contains more of the vital nutrients dogs need. Raw frozen foods are the closest to a dog’s natural diet, though they require home freezer space and time for thawing.

Switching over to grain free dog food should be done gradually over the course of a week. The bacteria and enzymes in a dogs stomach need time to adjust to a different diet. At first, mix a just little of the new feed in with the old. Continue to add a bit more at each meal as long as the dog shows no signs of stomach upset or diarrhea.
