To Be Or Not to Be Organic

To Be Or Not to Be Organic

Slowly but surely going organic is catching the minds and the bellies of consumers. It is pretty hard to miss as one strolls down the food isles and notice the organic section close by – especially in the fresh produce section. Even in the meats section, people are finding new packaging of “grain fed”, or naturally feed meats (or fed with organic grains…etc.).So what does this all mean? And is there a difference in the actually taste of these organic foods? And what does it really mean Organic? These questions will be answered shortly.Organic simply means a more natural way that farmers treat their fresh produce with the little use of pesticides on their crops. In other words, it is eco-friendly so that the soil that the farmers use will have less pollutants and a healthier produce such as vegetables, fruit and meats.

Actually it is not too bad when one thinks of it, because we are becoming more health conscience and is caring for the environment that we live in.ORGANCFarmers use natural fertilizers such as manure and vegetable compost.Alternate crops (such as planting new crops in a different area of the farm), plow, and mulch to manage weeds,Give their livestock organically grown grain; allow the animals to roam free. Practice cleaning out their stalls or housing more frequently. All these extra practices are in the aim to reduce the chance of diseases and the well being of their livestock.

The Use of helpful insects and birds, mating interruption or traps to reduce pests and diseaseNON-ORGANIC (Farming as it stands nowadays)Usage of pesticides to reduce or eliminate destructive insects to their cropsUsing chemical fertilizers to enhance and promote a rapid growth to their crops.Using chemical herbicides to eliminate weedsLivestock are given chemical hormones to speed up growth and antibiotics to eliminate diseases.

The last big question that people have is the taste of the organically grown foods. Honestly it’s a matter of personal choice, and we certainly do not want to sway folks in picking and choosing. For meats, we believe that there is a huge difference in grain fed meats and chemical hormone fed livestock.

If you compare the packaging of the same meats, you will notice that one of it (let’s use chicken for this example) is certainly fatter, and looks bigger versus the other package that looks less robust as the first. Actually there is a huge difference because the one that is smaller has more quality meat because the meat (muscle) of the fowl is tighter and it had a natural time to grow, versus the other; its growth was greatly pushed with the introduction of growth hormones.

The only downside to all of this is that going organic is more expensive. Going all natural is a lot more work for the farmers and takes longer to grow their foods. For fruits and vegetables, it’s really a toss-up for its taste. Some folks will argue that the organically grown fruits and vegetables taste a lot better. Honestly we cannot give our personal opinion because in the end of it all, all fruits and vegetables should be washed.Whether you go for the organically grown foods

Could the USA really support everyone if the entire country switched to organic?

For a while I thought about going all organic but then stopped to think…

organic means no growth hormones or anything like that
no growth spurts means less production
less production means less to eat
therefore we would need more land

I know there are people out there like me that wouldn’t mind eating out of our own organic gardens (I think my free fruits taste better than even things I can find in whole foods) but what about everyone else? I’m sure if people ate less and stuff that would help too. But even then is that a realistic idea? What if it was just food? What if it was everything?

I would expect that our agricultural exports would decline first as yields went down. American farmers are good enough that a lot of our crops go overseas to places that do not raise enough food. Going “organic” does lower yields, quality, and shelf life.
