The Exciting World of Honey Bees

The exciting world of the honey bee. The honey bee is truly one of the worlds most incredible creatures. They are always working. Who doesn’t like to see the bee working among the flowers? It stands out and is stunningly beautiful.

Most people are afraid of getting stung including myself, however bees are not anxious to sting people. When it stings and tries to pull away it is fatally wounded. As the stinger is torn away, it pulls the vital organs out

A bee is a powerhouse of energy. A drop of honey, is a high octane fuel that drives the bee from flower to flower. Bees and flowers are two parts of the same life. It is one of natures most incredible creations. A bee is the only flying creature designed to carry and transport heavy freight. It can handle and manage the heaviest of airborne cargoes. It has storage space as well as lifting power. All other flying creatures only carry themselves through the air, except for very light air mail such as twigs or worms. A bee can carry almost 100% of its weight.

A bee has several places for storing cargo. One is the tank on the inside, it sucks up and carries nectar syrup. The other two, are the bags on the hind legs for carrying pollen. The bee hasn’t changed its equipment in thousands of years. If the hive is thirsty it may carry water in its tank. The tank can be filled by sucking nectar through a tube. A well trained ground crew attaches the pollen to the outside of the hind legs. To keep loads from blowing off. The pollen must be moistened and pressed and packed on like a snowball, each leg evenly balanced.

All this equipment is useless unless the bees can be at the right place at the right time. They will not start out until they know, the flowers, the direction, and distance to these flowers. Now maybe a dozen or so bees go out in different directions, and scout the country side. When they return they will inform the others exactly what type of flowers, the position and the distance. Few creatures can communicate as well as the honey bee.

The queen never issues an order. she is consumed and entirely occupied with laying eggs. She knows nothing about flowers. She could spend a year in the hive and not go out in the daylight but maybe only twice in her life The worker bees do all the pollen gathering, and all related tasks. Although the queen may live for years, the worker bees only live forty one days.

Why can’t vegans eat honey if bees aren’t animals?

Bees naturally make honey, and WANT to make honey as part of their nature. Harvesting the honey in an organic way should not interfere with a Vegan’s belief of exploitation to animals, but I am curious to know how different Vegans feel about this.

1. Bees are animals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee )

2. Strict vegans do not eat honey since it comes from an animal.

3. SOME vegans do eat it since it (in organic bee keeping) does not involve killing or harming the bees (organic bee keepers HAVE TO take only as much honey as the bees have EXTRA and they HAVE TO replace eventually missing honey in winter with more HONEY and NOT sugar, and they are NOT allowed to kill any single bee or cut the wings etc).

4. Industrial bee keeping involves killing and exploiting the bees to the max, the queens wings are chopped off so the queen cannot migrate, and the honey is indeed replaced with sugar. Some industrial bee keepers even kill the bees in winter to spare the costs for the sugar :-/

5. Honey is one of the healthiest sweeteners in the world and it is one of the only food items which can store for an almost infinite amount of time (so if your honey has an “best used by” date on it, which is shorter than at least 2 years, it is most likely a fake “enriched” with any sugar or corn syrups). There were honeys found during archaeological research, in jars from the Middle Ages (= from 1000 years ago) and the honey was still normally edible, albeit the texture was of course slightly changed.

6. We need bees for a lot of our vegetarian plants. Actually there are already not enough bees and big fruit growing companies hire professional “pollinators” who travel with their bees from one place to another to let the bees pollinate the plantations. So being against honey and stopping to keep bees is probably not a very smart choice so far :-/ Bees are already endangered this or that way, due to GMO crops illegally or secretly harming them and the environmental damage, so they succumb much more often to epidemic diseases (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollination_management )

7. There is NO living organism on earth which would grow or make things “for us”. No matter if animal or plant. So in the end it is important to be grateful about whatever we take (it is ALL stealing and not “ours”) and give back to nature as much as we can. All natural tribes in the past lived like that and it did them well. Only in modern times people began to believe they would “deserve” things from nature as a sort of “higher being”. Nothing is “ours”. The nature would do fine and great without us here on earth. We have no right at all to feel morally saint if we skip this or that and declare other things as better. Nothing here is “ours” :-/
