Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae), commonly known as turmeric, is an excellent example of a plant that produces large numbers of metabolites and traditionally used as a source of colouring matter for foods, cosmetics and textiles and as a medicinal ingredient of formulations of the Indian system of medicine for several common ailments .

The active constituents of turmeric are categorized into the non-volatile components curcumin and other curcuminoids and the volatile essential oil. The content of the essential oil are the turmerones and other sesquiterpenoid cyclic ketones. Turmeric is an underground storage organ that is rich in secondary metabolites, many of which have been identified and characterized, while newer ones are expected to be discovered. Turmeric powder, extracts and oleoresins are some of the widely used commercial products of the C. longa plant. India is one of the largest producers of turmeric and oleoresin. The essential oils from rhizome and leaves, curcumin and oleoresin which are the major secondary metabolites of turmeric have been shown to be largely responsible for the pharmacological activities. i.e. anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, anti-microbial, wound healing, anticancer, antitumour and antiviral. The volatile oil of turmeric has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial activity and to increase bile flow. It was also found to be effective against bronchial asthma in a clinical trial. Both curcumin and the volatile oil have been shown to possess wound-healing properties and inhibitory activities against pathogenic fungi, both in vitro and in vivo.

The use of turmeric is spreading internationally; the production of turmeric must be increased to meet the national and international requirements by increase in both the area of cultivation and the yield per unit area. India is the largest producer and exporter of turmeric in the world and accounts for more than 50 per cent of the World trade. Orissa is 2nd largest producer of turmeric among all the states in India. Among all the high yielding varieties of turmeric from Orissa Suroma, Roma, Ranga and Rasmi are mainly cultivated in South Eastern region of Orissa and exported on the basis of high yield and high curcumin content.
