Apple – the fruit that keeps the doctor away

Apple occupies an important position among the fruits of the temperate regions of the world. The leading apple producing countries of the world are the United States, countries of Western and Eastern Europe, Japan in the Far East and Australia in the Oceania. The development of apple cultivation in India reached a more advanced state in the middle 18th century. It is now cultivated as a commercial crop in the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Kulu region of Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka state, and the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu.

Apple trees grow upto 14 metres in height. Among the recognised species of apples, Indian form is found growing wild in the temperate Himalayas from Jammu and Kashmir and Kumaon (Uttaranchal State) to Bhutan (Himalayan Kingdom) and Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya (north-eastern India), at an altitude of 1800-3000 metres.

Some types of apples withstand temperature even as low as -55 Degree Fahrenheit and require an annual rainfall of 60-70 cms. Apple fruits are collected in the months of October-November. Some major varieties of aples are Ambrikashmiri, Red delicious, Golden delicious, Royal delicious, Irishpeach, Newton wonder, etc.,

Apples are mainly served at the end of dinner. Apples with high acid content are used in the kitchen or in cookery. The juice extracted from apples are used freshly or after fermentation into cider (alcoholic drink), wine and vinegar. Apples are rich in pectin (substance used in the making of jellies and jams) and are useful in diarrhoea.

Apple murraba is used as a heart stimualnt. Apple juice, syrup and vinegar reduce curd tension of milk used in infant feeding.

It is said that apple relieves physical heaviness and mental strain. The root-bark of the tree destroys parasitic worms and causes sleep. An anti-bacterial substance, phloretin has been isolated from apple leaves.

Apple is composed of carbohydrates (sugars and starches) vitamins, acids and tannins. The vitamins and organic salts are concentrated particularly in and just below the skin. Hence the fruit should be eaten without removing the skin.

The chief products of apple are apple jam, apple juice, apple cider, apple wine, apple butter, apple brandy, etc.

um well ur pretty skinny and i dotnt think u will gewt really fat but ya itz a bit too much carbs. especially the 3 bowls of frosties and 17 jelly beans lol
