Pulsatile Wave Irrigation Helps Allergy/Asthma/ and Sinusitis

2011 promises to be the worst allergy season. Expect nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and allergic/sinus headaches. The allergy season will be longer.  In NYC, the ragweed season will go from 90 to 105 days.

Where to go for relief?  Used to be you could go to Arizona, California or Nevada and escape the ragweed. Now they have become the allergy areas.  Europe has its own allergy epidemic. Pollen calendar may help to direct you.

Why did this happen? Global warming is one reason. The growing season is extended. Increased CO2 levels are blamed.

Use Pollen and Allergy Calendar:

It is important to keep an Allergy Calendar next to the pollen calendar.  That way you can correlate your symptoms.  If you sneeze and drip worse on the day the Tree Oak pollen is at its height, that means you are allergic to Tree Oak.

Nasal Sprays:

Many persons get relief with nasal sprays and allergy pills.  Nasal sprays such as Flonase or Astepro are preferable to pills because they go to your nose and not to your toes. Benadryl can be useful because you can take this allergy pill at night and it has a side effect of making you drowsy to help you sleep.

Which Nasal Pill is Best?

There are dozens of allergy pills available including Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, Zyzal and others. The main problem is that doctors are unable to predict which pill is best for which patient. There doesn’t seem to be a universal perfect medication.

Pulsating Wave Action:

In the initial allergic reaction, the nasal cilia speed up and move pollen and bacteria out of the nose to the throat where they then end up in the stomach and are taken out by stomach acid.  But, when the nasal cilia movement slows or stops, then the pollen remains in place and can enter the nasal tissue and do harm i.e. an allergic reaction of nasal tissue swelling and blockage.  Sneezing takes place to blow away the unwanted pollen. Nasal tissue swells as a means of diluting the allergy chemicals such as histamine. This also brings healing elements to the area.  If you can keep the cilia moving, they will continue to move the pollen out of the nose and reduce the symptoms. With allergy, the wave action of the pulsatile irrigation acts like a massage, like a Jacuzzi massage, to push excess stale lymphatic liquid out and encourage fresh blood in with its healing elements such as lysozyme.

The means to refreshing the cilia is to use pulsating saline wave action irrigation. When the frequency of the wave action is similar to the normal cilia frequency, which stimulates the cilia to get back to its normal frequency of pulsation by harmonious action.

One sign of slowing of nasal cilia is when nasal discharge thickens and turns yellow or green. The frequency of pulsation of certain devices is tuned to match the best movement of nasal cilia. When you irrigate with such an irrigator, the wave action not only removes pollen and bacteria, it also stimulates the cilia to restore good movement. When the cilia are normal they move the pollen and bacteria out of the nose, thereby clearing the symptoms.

Thick Mucus Slows Nasal Cilia:

Another function of pulsatile saline irrigation is to remove thick mucus.  The nasal cilia move in a fluid environment and if the fluid is too thick or sticky, it slows the cilia movement. Just as you snap a wet towel to rid it of water, similarly the pulsing nasal stream, at a specific rate of pulsation thins the thick mucus layer.

Allergy and Sinusitis:

One result of slowed nasal cilia is that bacteria may multiply and cause a sinus infection.  This slowed nasal cilia is a reason for so much chronic sinus disease today.  With a longer allergy season forecast, it is imperative to act to prevent this kind of sinus infection.

Drink Hot Tea:

Tea, lemon and honey also act to bring good cilia movement. Tea contains L-theonone, a product that stimulates cilia movement. Lemon thins the mucus layer and honey does too, besides being bactericidal.

The allergy season will be longer this year. The advantage of pulsatile saline irrigation is that once the nasal cilia have returned to normal frequency, you may not need to continue the irrigation. You don’t need to be more normal.

At the recent Allergy meeting, there was evidence presented that showed that starting allergy medication before that actual onset of severe symptoms will actually reduce symptoms during the season. They also stressed that getting good sleep reduces symptoms.

Even though this allergy season will be longer and there will be more pollen, if you keep those little cilia moving well, you will feel considerably better.
