When You Open Your Mouth To Eat The Next Time , Beware Of What You Are Putting In
All of us need food to survive. Food provides essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals, and is ingested and assimilated by an organism to produce energy, stimulate growth, and maintain life. Fats are probably the most talked about because of the many discussions on the subject of dieting, popular among our time.
The types of fats you take in daily can be categorized into 2 types, unsaturated fats and saturated fats. The reason why unsaturated fats are considered healthier than saturated fat is the nature of the fat molecules once they reach the bloodstream. Saturated fat molecules have a natural tendency to bond with each other on contact, which eventually leads to the formation of artery-clogging plaque. Unsaturated fats, however, have larger molecules and tend to slide past each other in the bloodstream, which means little to no plaque build-up.
While it may be unwise to eliminate all saturated fats from one’s diet, switching to unsaturated fats such as olive or canola oils for cooking purposes does make sense.
However, there is a 3rd class of fats and one which we should avoid at all cost; trans fat. Trans fat can be natural or artificial. Small amounts of trans fat occur naturally in beef and dairy foods, while artificial trans fat are made when hydrogen gas reacts with oil.
The reason why trans fat is being created in the lab is clear: For the sole commercial purpose of increasing food production and shelf life. They can be found in cookies, hamburgers, french fries, crackers, icing, potato chips, stick margarine and microwave popcorn.
Besides providing zero benefits to our body, trans fat also clogs arteries and cause obesity. While we need food to function, we should strive not to get tempted to foods heavy in trans fat (cakes, fried food, burgers…) and instead, opt for healthier choices. Sure, trans food does taste better. But remember this, everything you put that articial food created by companies (with enhancers to make you addicted as well) into your mouth, you are making them richer while you are getting poorer, financially and in health.
It is known that about 80% of trans fat in American’s diet comes from factory-produce partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.
“Numerous studies have found that trans fats raise our risk of heart disease,” said Mary Beth Sodus, a registered dietitian at the University of Maryland Medical Center. “They can also contribute to an increase in total cholesterol levels and a drop in the healthy HDL cholesterol. These man-made fats are much worse for you than any other natural fat, even the saturated fats found in butter and beef.”
Your health is at stake, beware of what you put in your mouth the next time!
