3 Tips for Easy Meal Planning
Where has the family dinner hour gone? There once was a time when we would all come home from a long day and sit down with our family for a nice home-cooked meal. In today’s fast paced world, we need more bonding time with the family. One might say that in today’s day where people pile way too much on the plate of life, that it is impossible to have a family dinner everyday. I disagree. Wouldn’t you like to get back to the way it used to be?
One way to make family dinners easier to prepare is by planning ahead. Often times I find myself going to the grocery store every other day to pick up needed items, and this is how family time gets lost. Spend a little time planning out dinner ideas for the coming week. Pick meals that are quick and easy for your dinners during the week and save the more time consuming recipes for the weekend. Did you know that software has been developed that makes meal planning a breeze? With a click of the mouse you can organize your recipe collection into daily meal plans complete with nutrition facts and shopping lists. With the computer generated shopping list you won’t have to worry about forgetting a needed item when you go grocery shopping.
Another great way to ensure that your family eats together most nights of the week is to share the responsibility of preparing dinner. It can be difficult for one family member to be responsible for cooking everyday. Each member of the family can take turns cooking each night. This is also a good way to add some new flavors to your meals since each member may have a different cooking technique. For those family members who don’t cook often, this can prove to be a great learning experience. Review each family member’s weekly schedule and delegate the meal preparation tasks such as grocery shopping, cooking, and clean up. Working as a team is a great way to build strength as a family.
“Not meatloaf again!” I’m sure everyone has heard the complaints from that same meal being served week after week. Keep your family dinners exciting by trying different variations of your favorite recipes. An even better idea would be to test out some new recipes. Surprise your family with a delicious new dinner tonight and they will be sure to come back to the dinner table tomorrow.
Nothing is more important than your family. It’s worth the effort to make sure that your family eats together daily. Besides the needed nutrition, this time spent together will help open the lines of communication and make your family bond stronger.
I recently discovered an online service that saves time and money while providing you with new dinner ideas daily. Get access to powerful recipe management software, daily meal plans, money saving coupons and more at SendMeRecipes.
I am a college student looking for easy to make dairy, yeast and corn free snacks and meals, suggestions?
I’m a freshman at a college living in the dorms and two weeks before school started this past fall I found out I had allergies to dairy, yeast and corn (meaning I can’t have anything with high fructose corn syrup, corn starch etc in it). I made it through the first semester just barely taking lots of guesses at foods in the cafeteria, but this resulted in me being sick a lot. I’d really like to avoid this because it takes a toll on my social and performance in class but I don’t know any quick and easy recipes for meals or even snacks. I’m pretty familiar with the organic stores in the area, but I would also like to find foods that are available in other stores because I don’t have the money to constantly be buying from there. I have a small microwave and a refrigerator in my room, and there is also a stove in the kitchen which is in the basement of my dorm (unfortunately I live on the top floor).
If you paid for a meal plan in your dorm’s cafeteria, you should be able to find and/or request accommodation so you can eat there. This is your right and you can pull strings to make sure your rights are upheld if it comes to that, but I would start nice and make sure they know you need their help before you fly off the handle and claim you aren’t being treated right. It is very likely that they will be glad to help you eat well at the cafeteria every day.
You might not get a personalized alternative of everything they serve but you can almost always find something. I would arrange a meeting with the cafeteria manager to discuss your needs and get them down in writing. It will help to have the support of your parents (especially if you aren’t yet 18) and you will probably need to have documentation from your doctor, such as a prescription or a letter, saying that the accomodations are medically necessary.
When I was in college, I worked in the dining center, and there was always at least 3 entrees and several sides on the hot food line, a full salad bar, at least 30 cereals at breakfast, a fresh fruit bar, a deli line, an ice cream case, and a bagel and toast area. You could always get exactly what you wanted either by picking and choosing from the self serve areas, or asking that your food made to order (such as burgers on a grill…just ask for no bun) is made without your allergy foods.
Perhaps the best tool you can have here, is instead of guessing, is to ask for a list of ingredients to all the foods and recipes so you can make more educated choices. Should not be hard because those things just need to be printed out. They may even be able to flag your allergy ingredients and spit out a list of the dishes they serve that contain those things, so you have a no-no list. And until that list is available for you, just ask the server, or ask them to get you a cook or a supervisor who can tell you what is in the food! Just be polite and everyone will understand and not think less of you!
Armed with information and surrounded by such variety, it shouldn’t be hard to help you at all. The accomodations they make for you would probably be available to everyone so it will be to your advantage to try to eat early at each meal so you can have the most variety, or call and ask them to hold something if you know you will be late. They might ask if you have favorite fruits and vegetables that they can make sure is usually on the everyday pick and choose menu. They might ask about your favorite salad toppings and dressings that they can keep on the salad bar. They might set aside a portion of unbuttered cooked vegetables every night for you, or make you some french fries with an oil you can have, or offer you some tortillas instead of bread, or a potato instead of polenta.
From another angle, you should be able to get a list of common hidden allergens in your foods from your doctor. For example, all the foods that contain corn syrup are probably not good for you, and corn syrup is in so many items! This might be where you are misjudging and getting sick.
And (hang on while I grab my soap box) you will probably have the best luck with…fresh fruits and vegetables, single ingredients prepared simply, and fresh whole cuts of meat instead of processed meat or meat containing snacks. Rices, grains, flat breads, and quick breads rather than yeast breads.
