What is the Difference Between Standard and Organic Meat?
It is only in the last century that meats have moved away from being 100% organic to being influenced by synthetic chemicals in their feed…
However, if you are interested in buying organic meat and ensuring that your body receives only the best; making sure you understand the difference is essential.
How can I identify organic meat?
Beyond ingesting feed that has not been affected by synthetic chemicals, pesticides, insecticides and herbicides; organic meat can traditionally be identified as meat which has been reared:
• Without the use of antibiotics
• Without the use of growth hormones
• Free range and in conditions that best befits their natural environment
• Using a healthy diet of organic maize, corn or natural grazing pastures
Laws and legislation
Not just anyone can claim that they sell organic meat. By using the term, it means 1) they have been thoroughly checked to ensure they are following organic practices and 2) that their meat is traceable (all farmers must document the standards they followed whilst raising their cattle – from birth to slaughter).
Drug Policy
As mentioned above, to be classified as ‘organic meat’, they must not have received any antibiotics, growth hormones or drugs, other than required vaccinations.
Should they require further medication, by law, farmers must first remove them from the rest of the herd and no longer class them as organic.
Feed
Due to organic certifications, grazing cattle can have daily access to well-managed pastures for at least 120 days of the year. But this is not all…
To be classified as ‘green meat’ they are also not allowed to receive ground up animal parts or manure, but must be fed feed that is 100% organically grown and hasn’t been influenced by synthetic chemicals, irradiation etc.
Animal Welfare
The key to creating organic meat is raising livestock in conditions which best matches their natural environment. This means for cattle they must have regular access to well-managed pastures, and poultry must not be caged but be allowed to roam outdoors.
Buy organic meat
As you can see from the guide above there is a vast difference in care and quality between standard and organic meat. However, if you are interested in buying quality meat that is 100% organic, naturally reared and raised to the highest standards, there are many reputable online meat suppliers for you to choose from.
Simply remember to do your research, and ensure that when you buy organic meat you are certain of where it has come from.
I’m going vegan but I need help/don’t have any resources?
I’ve made the decision to go vegan. There’s a farmer’s market in my area which is where I buy most of mr fresh fruits and vegetables.
I’m really into cooking and altough I like fruit and veg, I want to include specifically vegan food products in my diet. Like soy cheese, soy or coconut milk yogurt, nature life (vegan “butter”), MATCH vegan meats, tempeh, etc. The only problem is, there are no health food or organic grocery stores in my area. The closest Whole Foods is over an hour away. My local grocery stores have tofu, but not much more than that.
How can I resolve this issue? Should I order some of these items online? Should I make one trip to Whole Foods once every one or two months to stock up?
I know that vegan means no dairy products, I mean vegan not vegetarian!
Glad to hear you’ve made up your mind to go vegan!
You’ll definitely be utilizing your farmers’ market to get all your fresh fruits and veggies. What better place to get them from? Great resource.
For the other food items you’re looking for, you’ll want to get that tofu at the grocery store for starters. As the poster above suggested, you’ll want to check out Happy Cow to make sure you’re not missing any health food stores in your area. If you can’t find any there, than you’ll want to make large orders online of a few of the soy products you want the most around the kitchen. There are plenty of online places to get vegan products, just do a little searching online. The downside is that you’ll have to pay for shipping, so, again, order a bunch at a time if they keep for a while.
Also note that you can get a lot of the protein that you need from legumes (beans) and whole grains. When eaten together in the same meal, they form perfect proteins inside the body that are equally as good – if not superior to – protein found in soy products or meat. You’ll also want to keep an eye out for products that have lots of zinc, calcium, and vitamin B12, as these are lacking in the vegan diet, and are hard to compensate for without fortified foods. There are common dry cereals out there that are fortified with all sorts of nutrients, such as Nature’s Path Optimum Cereal.
You can also ask the manager at your local grocery store to carry some more vegan friendly items. It may take them some time to get them in stock, but at least they’ll know there is a demand for it. If enough people request them, they’ll eventually give in and put it on their shelves.
Best of luck!
