How can I improve drainage of my pot?
My pot wasn’t draining well, I filled it with water and the water just sat there at the top lingering, it used to drain faster. I added coarse sand to the dirt, this did nothing for drainage. Every site I check just says to add sand or organic matter but I do not know which organic matter is safe for plants, can it be raw fresh organic matter like apple tree leaves?
I was going to add cedar chips, but after researching this idea it said that would damage the nitrogen supply and also cedar chips have a toxic resin which is deadly to plants (I am glad I researched it first!) but they are good to use as a mulch on top.
So what can I add besides sand since that did absolutely nothing for drainage? Thanks!! 
also, could it be that I just need brand new dirt? It seems a bit more muddy than it used to.
BagsOfSand, I did not water a plant I watered a pot full of dirt to test the drainage.
Put some little rocks over the holes in your pot.
I buy potting soil from Lowes for under 5 dollars a bag. Drains real good.
