Where can I find pet rat food and bedding that is cruelty-free, vegan, or organic?
Help! I am adopting two little girl rats from a rescue in under a week. No pet rat owners seem to be able to tell me if there are any alternatives for me as a vegan.
I know that rats need “lab block” to get nutrients, and everyone suggests Harlan Teklad (for litter/bedding as well), but that company exists to supply food and bedding to laboratory rats – I am not comfortable with that.
All of the other companies that offer bedding/litter (like Yesterdays News) are not in the clear for being cruelty free.
I must know if there are options for me as a vegan. Should I make my own? Can I even make my own lab block? Do compassionate companies exist that cater to pocket pets? Help!

You are supposed to feed them a lab block as well as a mix. I have the mix of grains and fruit covered – I am specifically asking about bedding/litter and lab block only, please.
I’d give them cardboard and news paper, they will chew it up and have more fun with it then comercial bedding.
