Free List Of Five Fat Burning Foods

Fat burning foods are vital for any body that is serious about losing weight and building a lean body. Check out this free list of five fat burning foods for some real nutritional powerhouses.

Oatmeal – Think rolled oats and stay clear of the instant, sweetened variety. Rolled oats might be very plain in terms of flavor but you can add to the taste easily with fruit, nuts and some of the berries listed below. Steel rolled oats are even better for you but can be quite expensive.

The Science: Oatmeal has actually been proven to lower the risk of heart disease and colon cancer because it breaks down and flushes out blood cholesterol and bad fatty acids. The soluble fiber found in oatmeal prevents insulin and blood sugar spikes, and keeps you feeling full for longer. This creates the perfect environment for fat burning hormones.

Shop For: Steel rolled oats (if you can find and afford them) or regular rolled oats.

Avoid: Don’t be tempted by flavored and sweetened varieties. These are packed with gut bulging artificial sweeteners!

Tip: Add berries and nuts for a delicious flavor.

Nuts (Almonds, Cashew, Macadamia etc) – Without a doubt nuts are my number one snack food. A small hand full of these will fill you up nicely in between meals, and actually contain healthy fats, vital for weight loss. Don’t fall into the “low fat foods” trap. Essential fats are needed for good health and to boost your metabolism.

The Science: Nuts are perfect if you are looking to lose belly fat. They are excellent sources of fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Like I’ve said many times before, eating fat doesn’t make you fat. Eating the wrong kinds of fat is the problem. Nuts do not fall into the “bad” category. Actually they are quite the opposite.

The fibre-protein-fat combination fills you up quickly and suppresses your appetite. So they leave you feeling full and satisfied, helping to control cravings for junk food.

Shop For: Aim for raw nuts or mixed nuts – Almonds, Walnuts and Macadamia nuts. Unsweetened peanut butter.

Avoid: Salted, dry roasted, chocolate covered… you get the picture.

Tip: Because nuts are so filling you will only need to eat small portions. The natural cocktail of vitamins, minerals, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats you get from mixed nuts only enhance their nutritional value. Why not try unsweetened peanut butter as a sandwich spread (beats margarine) or a side dip for a main meal?

Berries (Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, Cranberries etc) – We’ve already mentioned that berries are a great way of sweetening your usually bland oatmeal, but that’s not all they are great for. You can also add them to your protein shake, salad, natural yogurt or a mixed bag of nuts for a fat busting snack.

The Science: Berries are a natural source of dietary fibre, which helps slow your carbohydrate absorption, controls blood sugar levels and prevents the insulin spikes that can cause your body to store fat. Berries are also packed full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all of this with low calories – a real flab fighter!

Shop For: Organic, fresh or frozen berries.

Avoid: Tinned berried with added sugar.

Tip: Want to eat dessert with every meal? Why not have a small helping of berries? You can also add them to low-fat cottage cheese for a pleasant surprise.

Red Meat: Red meat (beef, bison, game) has been given a bad name thanks to poor cooking techniques and battery farmed, grain reared animals. Meat that comes from grass-fed animals actually has 30% less fat that the grain-fed equivalent. Not to mention the composition of this fat is much more favorable, with a perfect ratio of good to bad fatty acids.

The Science: Well exercised, grass fed animals produce a meat that is high in vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids and top quality protein. On the other hand, beef raised on grain (not the animal’s natural diet) produces poor quality meat, lacking in nutrients and containing bad fats. So the free range, grass fed option is the clear healthy, fat burning choice.

Shop for: Organic is best. Bison, beef and game that are free to roam and graze as nature intended produce top quality meat!

Tip: Avoid grain fed, mass production animals. The protein in this meat is harder to digest, not to mention the higher ‘bad fat’ content.

Whole, organic, free range eggs: Most people are scared of eggs because they believe them to be high in fat and cholesterol. But the truth is, organic, free-range eggs have no affect on blood cholesterol (blame processed and refined fats for that). Furthermore, the essential fatty acids inside an eggs yolk are vital for fat burning.

The Science: Egg yolks contain 90% of an egg’s nutrients. Iron, zinc, phosphorus, thiamin, B6, folate, and B12, panthothenic acid, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K and all of the food’s essential fatty acids. So if you are the type of person that only eats the whites, it is definitely time to rethink your approach.

Shop for: Free range, organic, whole eggs.

Tip: Battery farmed hens produce poor quality eggs so keep well away if you can. “Free-range” is a fairly loose term, with some hens only allowed out for less than an hour per day. So if you know of a local farm shop, and you know their chickens roam free during the day then it is best to shop there.
