Organic Cotton Men’s T Shirts – One Way To Decrease The Use Of Pesticides
For sure, cotton will always be the popular type of fabric. You can often find men’s t shirts having labels that say they are made from 100% cotton. At times, there are t shirts made from polyester as well. However, only a few people know that cotton production is one of the most environmentally-unfriendly farming practices since huge amounts of pesticides is often needed. The better alternative is to actually opt for organic cotton t shirts in order to help reduce pesticide use.
Cotton is considered as pesticide-intensive. It is one plant that depends so much on pesticides in order to stay healthy. If you own a clothing company that has vast tracts of cotton plantation, it would always be your instinct to protect the cotton from harmful insects.
One, using pesticides to grow cotton affects the wildlife in the surrounding area. Cotton fields provide food and cover to these living creatures. Quails, for instance, nest alongside the fields. A study has shown that those creatures living near cotton fields have pesticides in their bodies.
The use of pesticides on cotton primarily affect wildlife. These cotton fields provide wildlife with food and cover. For instance, quails nest in areas alongside cotton fields, and they are affected by pesticides used on cotton. In fact, research has shown that most of the quails living near cotton fields, about 60%, have pesticides inside their bodies.
A study conducted in 1978 found out that the quails living near cotton fields that use methyl parathion tend to either get sick or die. As a result, the birds would abandon their nests.
Cotton workers also suffer from various health problems like cancer due to pesticide exposure. In fact, in 1999, there were 24 cotton workers who died from being exposed to Endosulfan in Benin, a country in West Africa. Endosulfan is a pesticide used for on cotton.
One way to combat the harm brought about by the use of pesticides is to revert to organic means. Farms that produce organic cotton, some of which are found in Australia, do not utilize these synthetic pesticides, but they resort to more natural means like getting ladybugs on the field to combat the insects.
It is really good to know that there are manufacturers who take the time to consider the safety of the environment and the workers tending the fields. The organic cotton men’s t shirts that they produce could surely help in minimizing the use of pesticides.
