Why evaporate at 60ºC?
I’m doing a Column Chromatography experiment in my organic chem class where we use a silica gel column and a mixture containing ferrocene, acetyl ferrocene, and 9-fluorenone. We elute the mixture off the column by first washing the column with petroleum ether, then 8% tBME in pet ether, and finally pure tBME.
My Question: at the end of the experiment, we evaporate the appropriate fractions with boiling chips in a 60ºC sand bath to obtain the pure compounds. Why don’t we evaporate evaporate the solvent more quickly by heating the solvent to 100ºC? Thanks!!!
The boiling point of tBME is only 55 degrees Celsius. If you heat the solutions at too high a temperature, the solvent will boil so vigorously that you risk losing material from liquid splashing out of the sample container.
