10 Reasons Why Organic Foods Are Better For Your Health And The Environment

With all the hype and enthusiasm about going green, I’m sure we all want to do our part in contributing towards having a better environment. What better way for one to lead a healthier lifestyle while giving back to the environment than to turn to organic eating habits.

So many studies have shown that eating organic foods has great health benefits. The great thing about eating organic foods though, is that not only they good for our health, but the methods used during organic production are very beneficial to the environment. Here are some great reasons why they are better for ones health and the Environment.

1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards; therefore you can be rest assured that you’re getting the best quality of food.

2. Unlike non-organic foods, organic foods are not loaded with all the harmful pesticides that have been linked to many diseases such as cancer, alzheimer’s, some birth defects, obesity and excess weight.

3. Organic foods tend to contain 50% more nutrients, are richer in vitamins, higher in fiber, minerals, and essential fatty acids and they retain high levels of nutrients for much longer than non-organic foods.

4. Organic farming methods help in the preservation of insects and other small animals that depend on the soil for their survival. This is great for the environment.

5. Organic foods tend to be more filling than non-organic foods and are not loaded with artificial fillers and binders that leave you not satisfied and craving for more food.

6. Organic farmers use methods that protect our water resources and that do not leak nitrogen’s and other pollutants from the soil into our water system.

7. Organic farming leaves the soil fertile, replaces all of the minerals lost from the soil, so that the new crop of organic plants can have access to them as well.

8. Pregnant women who eat organic foods can have much better pregnancies and healthier babies, which leads to less health issues and a better and smoother pregnancy.

9. Organic foods taste a lot better than non-organic foods because they contain natural flavors that have not been altered by synthetic chemicals and over processing.

10. Unlike non-organic foods, organic foods are processed without the use of artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, hydrogenated fats, trans fats, saturated fats, additives or artificial preservatives.

How can I keep off cabbage root fly?

I have tried collars. They don`t work. It`s a myth that the flies crawl down the stems They lay in the soil by the side of the plant.. I have tried napthalene (a last resort). the little blighters are now immune to it.
I would really appreciate tried and tested organic recipe`s. I can buy more chemicals from my local suppliers without needing advice on how to do it

It is true the flies lay their eggs around the plants and when they hatch, they attack the plants (cabbage, radishes etc.). You can use some commercially available pesticides (be sure to follow the directions) before planting. Or you can put floating row cover where you have planted your cabbage, and keep the plants covered the whole entire time. The floating row cover will allow air and water go through and the flies can’t lay their eggs underneath… Those are the two choices I have. Happy gardening~!
