An organic chemist managed to extract an active component from the oil of wintergreen. Elemental analysis of the unknown compound shows that it contains 70.6 % of carbon, 5.9 % of hydrogen and 23.5% of oxygen by mass. The mass spectrum of the unknown (can provide real spectrum if possible) indicates that the relative molecular mass of the compound is 136. How do you think you can help him determine the relative empirical and the molecular formula of the unknown compound?

methyl benzoate
phenyl acetate
phenylacetic acid
Toluic acid

The problem to me seems that the common compound that is typically extracted from Wintergreen is salicylic acid (a precursor for aspirin). So I’d have some doubts about the data as presented – it doesn’t seem to make sense with real world experimental information

That said perhaps the extraction method targets esters and excludes organic acids. In that case it narrows the potential suspects to the 3 compounds with “ate” on the end of their name.

I guarantee you it is not p-anisaldehyde. Anis is a very distinct odor (even I can smell it with a chemically-fried sense of smell. Anisaldehyde isn’t in Wintergreen, I’ve smeel that for myself.
