Infrared video cameras, to fight organized crimes with its own weapons

As we know, to be able to defeat organized crime one must be able to think like the mafia does, with the same mindset that would give understanding of the logic behind their behavior. And when it comes to fighting them on the streets, the law must be able to use the same tools. An example can come from using an infrared video camera, used to read messages written with invisible ink.

One of the communication methods used by the Italian mafia to transmit messages and orders to its affiliates without leaving visible tracks and clues, is using the so called “pizzini”, small pieces of paper, hand written and hand delivered, which can only be intercepted by getting hold of the messenger.

Nowadays, this simple but effective communication method follows the evolution of technology and goes digital. In fact, papers can be written with special invisible inks, capable of standing direct sunlight for a week without wearing out. Fluorescent ink is completely invisible to the human eye, and can be seen only by using a special infrared video camera.

This ink is in fact visible only within a light frequency range below reach of the human eyes, but the special infrared camera, thanks to a system enhancement, can visualize this frequencies range, making papers written with this fluorescent ink visible. Infrared cameras, depending on the resolution you use, are capable of storing, on their internal hard drive, between 7 and 20 hours of footage, and also shooting image stills of the documents written with special ink.

Markers with invisible ink are supplied along with the infrared video camera. So, if organized crime uses this method to transmit orders and information to its affiliates, the law enforcement agencies will just have to equip themselves with the same tools, in order to be able to read any intercepted correspondence.

Of course, this is not the only possible application of the infrared video technology, but this kind of devices, always teamed up with invisible ink markers, can be used to transmit sensitive documents, for example in the military or diplomatic field, or to mark banknotes coming, for example, from a ransom, in order to trace them at a later stage. Individuals can use this technology to conduct confidential business negotiations, in order to keep the information confined within a small circle of people in the know.

Organic Chemistry Help!! Mass Spectrum for alkyl halide?

I was given a mass spectrum for an alkyl halide. The base peak occurs at 57 and the parent peak is at 136. There are also recorded peaks at 93 and 107. What is the halogen in this compound? How do you know this? What is the molecular formula for this compound? Or better yet, WHAT IS THIS COMPOUND?? Your help is much appreciated!!! (I’ve been stuck on this one for a long time)

1-bromobutane could fit. However, the isotope effect with bromine is missing. There should be a peak at 138 amu and any fragments containing the bromine isotopes as well. The peaks mentioned can agree with BrCH2(+), BrCH2CH2(+), and CH3CH2CH2CH2(+). This eliminates any branched analogs.
