Lima’s Organic Food Scene

Fifty years ago it was not uncommon for urban Peruvians to have a vegetable garden and raise poultry at home. These healthy, home-grown products were used to prepare nutritious meals comprised of fresh eggs, vegetables, fruits. As the globe became more “developed” large farming operations became the norm, while rural farming declined. Industrial farms often use powerful insecticides, chemicals, and hormones to mass-produce the food we find in grocery stores.

In response to this farming phenomenon, some consumers opted for organic produce. This option offers a variety of fresh flavors while being environmentally sustainable. While other countries have begun to popularize organic foods, it is just emerging in Lima.

For 8 soles you can try the vegetarian enrollados (tortilla wraps) at the Bio Feria organic food market on Saturdays in Parque Reducto. The best ingredients are available at this market starting at 8am. The market boasts everything from breads and coffee to freshly prepared meals, all vegetarian and scrumptious.

Another delicious organic spot in Lima is the restaurant AlmaZen on Jose Galvez in Miraflores. Owners Mariella Matos and Henry Vera offer healthy food made from 100% organic ingredients. The inviting gray-blue building feels more like a home than a restaurant, and the interior décor is relaxing. The menu changes daily, so keep going back to taste the wide variety of options.

Hierbabuena also serves delicious organic good. Owner, Manuel Ferryros buys once a week at the Bio Feria but complements his needs with orders from small providers. He has found it is difficult to buy from small scale producers due to the limited number of organic providers and other logistical problems. Enjoy the eclectic range of food and drinks on the patio located at San Martín 533.

To get your morning fix, visit Arábica in Miraflores or Quinta Esencia in Chacarilla. Arábica coffee house offers varieties of organic coffee. Owner, David Torres, has made alliances with organic coffee growers across Peru to offer 100% organic products. Quinta Esencia located on Monterrey 258, is a shop full of organic teas. Founder, Luciane Delpino, believes it is important to preserve the environment and maintain ecological balance.

While these options offer many wonderful dishes, hopefully the number of organic options in Lima will continue to grow out of popularity and respect for the environment and personal health.

okay this is what i’ve ate today..I feel so bloated, fat, and horrible. please be kind. was this too much food?

do you really feel bloated or is your brain telling you that you are bloated because you see yourself as fat?
i don’t think you could possibly be bloated with what you ate today. you didn’t eat too much sodium, so that cant be it. you didn’t sit around all day, so that cant be it. and you definitely didn’t eat a lot (or enough!), so that isn’t it either.
you need to eat more. you have to get to 1500 calories. never go below 1500 calories. i know its hard, and i totally understand because i was in your boat a few months ago, but you have to just face your fears and do it. just don’t even think about it. grab a vita top and eat it and then just forget about it and distract yourself.
i can guarantee you, once you start to increase your calories and gain a little bit of weight (i know, its scary. but you have to tell yourself that its important for your health!!) you will feel a whole lot better. your muscles will loosen up, you’ll have more energy, you’ll get your period back, and you probably won’t get bloated as easily.
i would suggest you drink a few glasses of water right now to get rid of the bloated feeling and wash the food through you.
