Choosing a Healthy Ground Turkey Recipe out of Multiple Recipes

People usually think of turkey burgers as being a healthier option to the traditional all-beef hamburger. Yes, they taste pretty yummy – piled high with lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, onion and relish – but is it really the best choice? Are turkey burgers healthy?

Are Turkey Burgers Healthy? Not All Turkey Burgers are Low in Fat and Calories

Most people assume that because a turkey burger is made from turkey, it’s low in fat and calories. Not necessarily so. There are multiple ground turkey recipes and you can choose one as per your choice. Some turkey burgers are made with ground turkey that’s mostly dark meat and turkey skin – which adds additional saturated fat and calories. In fact, ground turkey may be made from all dark meat – using whole muscle pieces – which may give it a fat content as high as 17%.  In a situation like this, eating a burger made from lean ground beef would be a better choice – as long as you choose a burger made from organic beef to reduce exposure to bovine growth hormone or antibiotics.

Not all turkey burgers are created equal, so read the label carefully before dropping it in your cart. Nutrition Question: Vegetarian or Organic meat?

OK I haven’t eaten beef, pork or ham etc since 1996. I stopped eating chicken/turkey in 1997 and I started eating it again 2004 (thinking I was eating too many carbs). I’ve always eaten fish/seafood. I’m allergic to soy and tree nuts. So protein is hard for me to get.

I don’t eat meat because I don’t agree with factory farming, and the diets the animals are fed (hormones, antibiotics, corn/filler/other animals). I do enjoy the health aspect of it, I and I like the fact my chances of certain cancers are lower. (colon) My cholesterol is about 160 but 5 years ago it was 120ish.

I am wondering and thinking that I lack lots of muscle, and protein. I would like to start to eat meat again but organic, free range/roaming, no hormones, no antibiotics, etc meats.

But is that healthy? Obviously not in excess, but is it better to remain a vegetaraian for my health? I was thinking of only eating meat like 3 times a month anyway.

At McGill University I took a food science class (with three registered doctors specializing in food science) and we addressed this issue.

The facts:

Typically, those who eat no meat live longer than those who eat meat several times a week.

A vegetarian diet can result in health complications too, such as low iron and a lack of complete protein. If you want to keep your vegetarian diet but cannot consume soy, a mix of beans and rice is your best option to get complete proteins.

Some meats are healthier than others – chicken and fish are preferable to beef and pork.

Their conclusion:

The healthiest lifestyle involves eating fish regularly (2 – 3 times per week), and eating a small portion of other meat such as chicken once or twice a month, while also consuming complete proteins (i.e. beans and rice) on occasion.
