Farm holidays around Bangalore, India

Farm tourism or farm holiday is the buzzword these days, thanks to the hustle and bustle of city life that makes you want to go back to the countryside and live in harmony with nature. Here’s an information on a few places around Bangalore where you are offered such an ambience, with basic facilities to ensure a comfortable stay.

Farm Weekends, located about 50 kilometers from Bangalore in Chikkaballapur district, is on a hillock overlooking the valleys of Nandi Hills and a lake.  The farm has everything you would look for in a holiday. Birds, hens, dogs, cats, ducks, sheep, cows, geese and catfish await you to get pampered by your love and care. You can feed them, play with them, watch them and just be around with them as if you were with them always. Other farm activities offered here include riding a bullock cart and visiting vegetable and spice gardens. Besides, Farm Weekends offers basic amenities like an outdoor play area, indoor games section, a swimming pool, a library, DTH TV in all their resort-cum-farm-houses and satellite radio as well. Stay at Farm Weekends is allowed only for one day and one night and with prior booking you can stay there for two days at the most. 

Our Native Village in Hessarghatta, Bangalore is another option to spend weekends relaxing in an eco resort and indulging in farm activities like milking cows, riding a bullock cart, pottery, making garlands and even playing rustic village games like gilli danda, marbles and kite-flying. The resort offers a luxurious stay with spa and Ayurvedic massage facilities as well. You can also go swimming or cycling around their organic farm to feel nature at its best. One to four night packages are available at Our Native Village. The check in time at Our Native Village is 12 noon and check-out time is at 11 AM. 

Wake up to the sound of cuckoos at ATR Morritt Farms in Kolar Gold Fields, about 90 kilometers from Bangalore, for a farm holiday experience in an absolute rustic set up. The cottages at Morritt Farms are built overlooking the farm and a lake. The farm also has caravans and dormitories with activities including organic farming demonstration, tilling, fishing, trekking and tour of banana plantation. They also arrange tours to Kolar gold mine. 

If you want to stay in proper village-like houses and not resorts on your farm holiday weekends, Angana resort on Kanakapura Road in Bangalore is the place to be. Angana, which means the courtyard, is a theme resort built in the form of a countryside house with a central courtyard and six independent rooms around it. There are two cottages too. Rustic teakwood furniture, gramophone and dim interiors will enliven your childhood memory of a village house where courtyard used to be the center of all activities. Even the swimming pool in the backyard of Angana reminds of those ponds at village temples as it’s built with stairs on the sides. Other amenities offered at Angana include a massage center, conference hall, an open party hall, an amphitheater, kids’ play area, indoor and outdoor games. You can stay overnight or visit for a day picnic. Advance booking with full payment is mandatory. The check in and check-out time is 12 noon.

Why does Organic Valley use Unrecylable containers for their Milk?

On the back of their cartons, they say that they are committed to a healthy earth. I don’t see how making containers out of unrecyclable wax cardboard is conducive to making the environment healthier.

Good question, and I don’t know the answer but…for example, things are not always what they seem. I have heard a good argument that glass bottles are more wasteful than plastic. The reason being that the glass is only recycles ~8 times, the energy to make every 8 times, plus the energy to clean and get ready for reuse is more than the energy needed to make 8 plastic bottles. Some kind of full (energy)cost-benefit-analysis might explain the use of wax cardboard.
