Can you save your respirator filters?

I heard that you can take your filters off and put them in a zip lock bag to use again because they’ve got a long life. Is this true? I’m using the respirator only for spray painting nothing else. I’ve got a North 7700 series half face mask with a pair of filters labeled NIOSH CL/HC/SD/CD/HF/OV P100. I was told at the hardware store they “organic vapor” filters that will be good for just paint.

Hello Strosen.

Since you are only spray painting, you should be okay with this mask and filter. (You should have been fit-tested for proper sizing of the mask to your face to allow no breakthrough of particulates.)

You can use the filters as long as you experience no taste, smell, or have trouble breathing (indicates no breakthrough). Keep the filters in a sealed bag and only use for that application. Also keep the filters away from fumes as that will reduce the wear time. Be sure to wash the mask after each use with a mild soap solution and get the dust off.
