ORGANIC CHEM – Determining composition of vapor mixture?

Methylbenzene and 1,2-dimethylbenzene mix to form an ideal solution. At 90ºC, the vapor pressure of pure methylbenzene is 400 Torr and that of pure 1,2-dimethylbenzene is 150 torr.

Use Raoult’s Law: P = X₁(ℓ)P₁ +X₂(ℓ)P₂ (The vapor pressure of each component is proportional to that component’s mole fraction in the liquid phase – weighted by the pure component’s vapor pressure.)

“I don’t know how many moles of either compound are present” … Yes, that’s what you are supposed to figure out.

270 torr = (400 torr)X₁(ℓ) + (150 torr)X₂(ℓ)

But the sum of the mole fractions in the liquid is 1: X₁(ℓ) + X₂(ℓ) = 1

⇒ 270 = 400X₁(ℓ) +150[1 – X₁(ℓ)] = 250X₁(ℓ) +150

X₁(ℓ) = 120/250 = 0.48 ; X₂(ℓ) = 0.52

X₁(v) = X₁(ℓ)(400 torr) = (0.48)(400 torr) = 192 torr (methylbenzene)

X₁(v) = X₂(ℓ)(150 torr) = (0.52)(150 torr) = 78 torr (1,2-dimethylbenzene)
