Top 15 Tips On Transitioning To A Vegan Diet

Transitioning to a plant-based diet is a lot easier than most think.  In fact, the challenge is all in your head.  If you think about it, in many ways you have already eaten several vegan meals and without even being aware that you had done so.  For instance, you’ve probably enjoyed a salad as a meal, had pasta with primavera sauce or whipped up a scrumptious vegetable stir fry.  So given the ease with which you did those things, the rest of the transition will be a cake walk.  Here are some tips to top that cake with icing.

  1. Pick 3 days of the week to do a “meatout”
  2. Eliminate one meat at a time
  3. Replace beef, pork, and poultry with vegan meat substitutes (e.g. Boca Crumbles and Burgers, Tofurky products, Lite Life Bacon strips, tofu, mock chicken, etc.)
  4. Gradually eat more fresh fruits and vegetables
  5. Start eating more organic foods to awaken your taste buds
  6. Start to eat more of the vegetarian dishes that you already eat (e.g. beans & rice, fruit salad, salad, vegetable or bean soup, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, pasta with sauce (no meat), etc.)
  7. Start to purchase the vegan kitchen essentials, including some good vegan cookbooks
  8. On your next couple of trips to the store replace a few meat-based items with vegetable-based ones (e.g. get Soy Delicious ice cream instead of Edy’s or get Veggie or Rice Shreds instead of cheddar cheese)
  9. Establish a social network of other vegans so that you have a support system
  10. Avoid lamenting over what you can’t eat as a vegan and focus more on the variety of vegan food choices now at your disposal that you have yet to explore
  11. Become an expert on veganism (a lot of people always want to know more about it and will come to you for advice)
  12. When attending social functions eat before going (they will often not have any vegan food choices and this will cut down on temptation)
  13. Snack often, at least 2 times a day, on healthy vegan treats (e.g. seeds, fruits, veggies and dip, smoothies, etc.)
  14. If you’re feeling hungry despite having eaten a meal and snacking treat yourself to a nice cup of herbal tea
  15. Be easy on yourself (when you give in to temptation and indulge in some non-vegan food don’t beat yourself up.  Just vow to overcome the next time).

Why do people think women can’t be Vegan and pregnant at the same time?

My wife and I are Vegan. She lives on a high quality organic Vegan diet and eats extremely nourishing nutrient dense foods. Right now she’s pregnant with our twins (a girl and a boy) and she has been having a very healthy pregnancy. She absolutely never gets sick and is a picture of perfect health and vitality. Yet people who don’t live like us are always criticizing saying she should be eating milk/dairy and meat and that she is depriving the babies of “nourishment” and is a terrible mother. Like everyone seems to think they would make better parents. My wife is very educated and knows what she’s doing. I think we’ll be great parents and have the right to raise our children with any beliefs we choose. Why are people so unwilling to accept ways of living that are different from their own?

Part of the answer is that we’re still learning about nutrition – anybody who says they completely understand it is lying.

We don’t have a full grasp on exactly what the fetus needs, but we do know that, at least in the past, strict vegan diets haven’t supplied it. As we learn more, we figure out what we need in a vegan diet and the concern decreases.

The Vegan diet 30 years ago was appalling – but as we’ve learned how to up the protein etc, the differences between it and a meatier diet are less noticeable from the fetus’s point of view.

Which is to say, there are other factors that are far MORE noticeable, such as smoking, alcohol, water intake, etc.

No mother has ever had the perfect diet for a fetus – or at least, if she has, we don’t know it. Why? We don’t know what the perfect diet is. As we know more, it is easier to shape a diet to what the fetus needs and yes, that means we can shape a vegan diet just as well as a meaty one.

Your average person off the street doesn’t know that yet.
