Making a choice on tailored Baby Clothes

When my first niece arrived, I was almost as delighted as her mum – and I should know because I had the benefit of being there at her birthing. My brother-in-law was working abroad when my sister went into labour and I was allowed to remain with her throughout. Not only did I view the miracle of creation first hand, I was handling the new arrival within minutes of her appearance (after she had been introduced to her mom, of course).

Well as anticipated every new entrance needs a new wardrobe and luckily I adore spending, specially for clothes. We all want our babies to look their best and, let’s be honest with each other, dressing them prettily is half of the amusement of having a baby. For everybody who loves shopping, as my sister and I do, we had another alibi to wallow in in our favourite pastime

One thing I didn’t want, was to buy from the big stores that had rail after rail of alike garments, no doubt constructed in some third world sweat shop. Comfort and style were very important, but decent trading methods are also a great consideration. I soon stopped even looking in the high street shops and started researching some interesting new designers and producers online.

There are a stunning number of these designers around and it is a perfect joy to see them being fresh with eco-friendly fabrics like soybean fibre. In case you haven’t come across this, it is a by-product of tofu and soymilk production. Apart from its sustainability, it also creates amazingly tender and very smooth material, perfect for delicate skins; softer than cotton and warmer than wool. The first rompers I bought were made from this new fabric and are so much softer than regular baby-grows.

That prompted me to look for other new textiles produced in environmentally friendly ways and I came across a fabric made from organic bamboo. This is another opulent yarn that is altogether chemical-free so it is naturally hypoallergenic and voluptuously kindly – far more so than natural cotton and with greater absorbency. Being thermo-regulating, it is ideal for bodysuits and baby blankets. But the real beauty is the perfect range of charming designs from newborn up to aged 5..

I think denim always looks cute on babies and it is incredibly enduring and cozy. Well we know that – that’s why we all choose it for our casual wear. The moment babies start crawling, I think they should all be kitted out in denim jeans. This is working for the little explorer and so simple to manage for mum.

Cotton is marvelous in summer as it is naturally absorbent and allows the skin to breathe. I found an excellent range of cotton playsuits with colourful animal appliqu? designs on the front: owls, frogs etc which I just had to pay for. They had sweet matching hats and could easily be co-ordinated with little cardigans or jackets if an extra layer was required.

I know babies grow so quickly that they don’t need an all-inclusive wardrobe at any one time, but with so many superior tailored baby clothing available, it’s difficult not to splash out. Just like for adult clothing, terrific designs become timeless classics and fantastic quality baby clothes are well worth putting away for future needs. Apart from that, I do believe all these new new designers who have gone to so much trouble to bring these superb garments to us, deserve our support – and that is my justification if I am asked about it.

Should I be using pure cotton in a crocheted baby blanket?

I love the feel of cotton, but some other pretty yarn that I have is acrylic and just as soft. I rarely use any manmade materials. I would like to finish it but don’t want to spend extra money on organic yarn.

Cotton should be just fine, if that’s your preference. It also breathes better than acrylic. As long as it’s soft, it doesn’t really matter, although I would say if you’ve already started it in cotton, you should finish it in cotton–and not all 100% cotton yarns are expensive–actually, some of the cheapest yarn is 100% cotton. Just make sure whatever you make is soft and washable.
