Choosing the Right Bed Linen
Have you just finished decorating a bedroom? Or perhaps you’re tired of your bedroom’s style? Your bed is the centrepiece of your bedroom, so deciding on your new duvet cover is an integral part of making your room seem ‘whole’.
Firstly, consider who will be using the room. Is it you? Is it one of your children? Or will it be a guestroom? Always think about the character of the person sleeping there, because they are a key part of the personality of the room. If you get it wrong, the whole ambience of the room will be off kilter!
Next, think about what the lighting is like. Does it get a lot of natural daylight, or is it all artificial? Lighting is crucial when considering your colour scheme.
The colour of the bedding is extremely important in conveying the mood of the room. Neural creams and browns have been particularly popular in the past few years, which might be ideal for guest rooms. Rich colours, such as oranges and purples, will create a warm atmosphere. Light greens and blues will keep a room airy and cool. Or how about something a little more striking: black or deep red bedding can add a dramatic, sexy vibe!
But beware: certain colours can make rooms look smaller. If you’ve got a box room, stay away from the darker shades, as the dimensions will appear to shrink.
Also, think about whether you want something contemporary. Block colours or wild, modern patterns can make a plain room trendy again. Or maybe you were thinking of something more classic. If so, consider ruffles, frills, and flowers for a homely feel.
The material you choose will affect the final look. Always buy high-quality bedding where possible, as it will last longer. Most people decide on classic cotton sheets. If you want something a little more luxurious, go for Egyptian cotton with a high thread count, or organic cotton for that earthy feel. If you’re feeling more adventurous, satin sheets will give the room a sexy feel. The glossy look of the sheets will ensure the bed is the main focus. Bedclothes are available in many other fabrics, so perhaps you’ll try linen or silk. The texture of the fabric will definitely enhance the atmosphere you’re going for.
The filling is your next choice. How dense do you want your duvet to be? You may need a thicker down in the winter months. And in the summer, you might only need a sheet or two for cover.
Once you’ve chosen your colour scheme and style, you go crazy with accessories! If you’ve gone for the dark and sexy style, try fur or velvet cushions scattered at the head of the bed. A long throw draped across the foot of the bed can also make an impact.
