Yardlong Beans: The missing gem
Yardlong Bean Overview
Vigna sesquipedalis
The Yardlong Bean, also known as the asparagus bean or Chinese long bean is known for producing very long pods, hence the name. The pods actually are closer to 18 – 20 inches at full maturity.
This plant is very different than the common bean, so much so that it is in a different genus. These unique beans grow on aggressive vines and possess a tenacious root system. Although they Yardlong Bean may resemble pole beans they are much more a trailing and climbing plant. The Yardlong Bean often reaches 9 – 12 feet in height.
The plants bloom in mid-summer with a pair of large white or purple flowers on the tips. Typically the blooms are prevalent in the morning time and are exhausted by evening. The flowers are followed by tiny dark green beans that reach 12 inches long in only a few days. As the beans grow they ripen to pale green flesh. They will begin to inflate as the seeds are ready.
This tropical plant is widely grown in the warmer parts of Southeastern Asia. Yardlong Beans grow very quickly. It is advised to check and harvest them daily once they begin to produce.
The many varieties of Yardlong Beans are usually distinguished by the different colors of their mature seeds.
Yardlong Bean Growing Tips
Although both red seeded and black seeded Yardlong Bean exist, the black seeded pod is preferred for human consumption. Yardlong Beans are a legume which implies that they enrich the soil by fixing atmospheric nitrogen in nodules on their roots. With the help of nitrogen fixing bacteria, the plant makes its own food. Yardlong Beans thrive when Compost Tea is mixed into the soil bed. Compost Tea is teeming with unique nitrogen fixing bacillus.
Yardlong Beans prefer soil pH range of 5.5 to 7.5 but have been known to tolerate more acidic soils. They easily tolerate hot weather and even some drought. However, to keep the beans producing, water in dry spells. It is unnecessary to fertilize Yardlong Beans unless you have nutrient-poor soil. The plants thrive in loose soils that do not contain excessive nitrogen. Soils heavy in nitrogen can cause over abundant leaf growth and reduced bean production. Ideal preparation is a soil bed 8 – 10 inches deep with a nice mix of compost.
Since the Yardlong Bean is an aggressive trailing vine it requires a trellis. The plant does need assistance in the early parts of the growing season to be trained up the trellis. The ideal trellis height is the maximum height that you can reach comfortably. Although the Yardlong Bean exceed 12 feet in height on a trellis it would not be much fun to harvest from a ladder.
Planting Yardlong Beans
- Yardlong Beans thrive in the heat and are not cold hardy.
- Sow after all danger of frost.
- In order to move the planting schedule ahead you may need to solarize the soil for a period of two weeks.
- For a tripod system plant three or four seeds to each pole.
- Trellis System plant the seeds 3 to 4 inches apart in the row.
- Planting depth should be two inches deep.
- To ensure good germination water immediately after planting.
- If you live in zone 7 or higher you may be able to get successive plantings. Southland Organics suggest planting in two week intervals for maximum production.
- Seeds germinate in a week and the plants will produce abundantly in warm weather.
Yardlong Bean Harvesting
Yardlong Bean pods begin to form in just 60 days after sowing. They hang in pairs all along the vine. Although the bean pods may grow longer than 20 inches long, most people prefer to eat them 10-12 inches in length. The pods should be harvested while the skin is still smooth and has just begun to turn a pale green. Once the seeds begin to mature and expand the flesh of the bean will turn lighter color and begin to split. The ideal diameter at harvest is the size of a pencil.
The pale green bean is typically meatier and sweeter than the dark green bean. The dark green pods are more robust.
A daily harvest is reccommended since continuous picking keeps the plants producing. The plants will stop producing if beans are left to ripen. Yardlong Bean will keep several days in the refrigerator but they are best eaten soon after harvesting. They are great blanched and frozen.
Yardlong Bean Cooking Tips
Yardlong Bean have dense texture and a lovely intense “bean” flavor. Yardlong Beans are great when snapped and cooked in stews with tomato sauce. They are ideal in a stir-fry. They are also amazing when lightly blanched and used as a salad topping. They combine very well with lemon juice, garlic, butter and olive oil. Although not typical the matured beans can be shelled and cooked similar to peas.
Yardlong Bean Nutrition
Yardlong Beans are an excellent source of vitamin C, folate, magnesium, and manganese. They also contain protein, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, iron, phosphorus, and potassium.

Yardlong Bean Pests & Problems
Aphids are a typical issue with Yardlong Beans. Thrips may be an issue early in the season but due to the aggressive growing nature the Yardlong Bean usually out grows any threat from thrips. If you dare broadcast spray insecticides you will most likely see an outbreak in mites as soon as the insecticide washes away.
In northern climates nematodes and fungus may become a problem.
I have a phobia of clusters, can anybody relate?!?
But only if they’re like organic matter, like plant or insect. And USUALLY only if they’re circular in some way, however clusters of bees or even butterflies are just as bad. So really the key word is ORGANIC.
Like lotus seed pods:

Or those bumps on leaves:

Seriously, just looking at those pictures makes my hair rise, my skin itch and shiver, and I feel extremely nauseous. EVEN THINKING THE WORD!!
People this I’m crazy for this, but can anyone relate?
i suppose you don’t like bouquets.
